I've never played Fallout but I'm watching the Amazon series. I haven't yet read all of the Silo trilogy but I'm watching the Apple+ series. The further I get into both the more I feel compelled to ask: is Silo actually Fallout fanfiction?

As cute as little kids in snow outfits are, I do not miss having to pull it all out of storage and then repeatedly dressing and undressing small children on snow days. I appreciated it in its time and now that era is over.

In the first months of Twitter there was a global feed of every tweet. One day I randomly spotted my first online crush circa early 90s Prodigy in there. What a time to be online. Too bad Twitter inexplicably vanished from the internet in October 2022.

Agentic coding is impressive in the right hands but telling AI what to build doesn't make you a developer, it makes you a middle manager -- at best an architect. I love that it's eliminating barriers to entry and democratizing code but please don't stop there.

Gemini, my urine just came out like a slushie, should I be worried about my core body temp?

Facebook seems very determined to keep me informed of the latest Glambot tea against my will, like it's taking me blocking all such slop as a challenge. I'll take an interest in this circus, Facebook, no matter how many ways spammers dress it up.

I am a little worried that He-Man is a Surf Dracula and won't hold the sword aloft and intone the phrase of power until the third act is nearly over.

I repent every research paper I wrote in college about how computer-mediated communication would free us from ethnic and gender bias and allow each person to be judged on how well they express themselves. Eternal September, then human slop, now AI slop.

Most of my kids entered college with a career in mind, attending a specialized program targeted at it with a known success rate at placing graduates in that field. The high cost of education these days now precludes finding yourself through initial general studies, I fear.

My college kids have returned to school. The eldest has returned to his house. Only the high schooler remains home. It’s very quiet.

Retraction of the Day: I have no plans to try not to breathe. While these eyes are, increasingly, the eyes of the old, in my youth I did try to both burden and worry you; contrary to previous claims, I did not hold those things inside. I repent the foolish drama. #REMember

Probably a lesson in there somewhere on how much energy went into scolding people online for playing the Nazi card in arguments even as more and more people were actually being drawn to that identity.

Note to self: Do not update multiple pieces of the toolchain before testing that the project still builds.

In simple machines, sound is wasted energy. You’d think bros in lifted trucks or tricked out Hondas would be embarrassed to broadcast the inefficiency of their ill-tuned engines. (OTOH, their vehicle choices already announce that they’re compensating…

Does anyone remember when one of the third rails of internet discourse was Godwin’s Law? It may be hard for the youth of today to imagine a time when Nazis were so stigmatized that comparing someone online to one was usually unjust hyperbole.

Q: What do Grok and ICE have in common?

A: Racism, sexual assault, and leadership claims that more training will fix the issues.

On Jan 7, 2026 six Minneapolis moms subdued an ICE agent, took his gun, dragged him down the stairs, tased and beat him till unconscious. He suffered a heart attack and traumatic head injury.

Oops, my mistake, that’s what pardoned peaceful protesters did to me Officer Mike Fanone on Jan 6, 2021.

Instead of ending the constitution and murdering people, we could have high speed trains and universal health care.

Thanks in large part to my wife’s photography skills my two eldest children, at 4 and 6, had Orkut fanclubs full of Brazilian youths posting as them, including one in which they were not siblings and were shipped. The fan art was amazing.

The animating principle of representational democracy is to protect the rest of us from the whims of deranged rich people, be they kings or oligarchs. Everything else is wainscoting.
The problem is that the child porn website is owned by the richest man in the world, who no one wants to pick a fight with, and even less so now that he's aligned with the president of the U.S., himself a maniacal sex criminal. Nothing gets fixed without breaking the political power of big money
I am once again reminding you all that the UK government introduced an Online Safety Act that is effectively a porn ban on most adult porn websites, but is dithering over banning a website that is actually creating child porn.

My retired teacher grandma swore that one summer she caught a German spy. “That’s Summer of My German Soldier”, I said, “I read it in 4th grade.” Later she told me of a failing student she had reached by teaching him to play basketball: Michael Jordan.…

This isn't just a casual observation. Fascism scholars have long made this point. It's why calling them "weird" was a more effective strategy than talking about the prices of eggs. Fascism is an aesthetic political movement - you need to make people feel embarassed and horrified by it.
one of the most effective weapons we have against fascism is mockery, especially when its really funny
It occurs to me all the yelling at ICE in MPLS isn't merely funny. Getting made fun of like this is awful for morale. ICE is losing field officers faster than it can wave them through training, and a big part of it is how little of this these little weasels can take.
