This was always a concern for us as our kids were growing up, for the baseball/softballers, in particular. I think we handled it okay but I was always amazed at how far some parents were willing to push their kids.

yes, "other people exist, they might disagree with you, you should have a strategy for dealing with them" is "standing up for being mealy mouthed."

go outside and talk to a real person for once
still standing up for being mealy-mouthed in an era where the republican president is a brain melted fascist ogre who says things every single day that were politically unspeakable not even ten years before is a complete failure of imagination

TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

Another day, another gazillion false claims by bigots against Americans from Somalia who take care of children.

Bigot: Look at 40+ centers open the same date! That has to be fraud!

This is powerful footage because of what it depicts, but also because of the way the arrest interrupts our expectations of the on-the-street interview; which makes the arrest more shocking both for its brazenness and the way it impacts the viewer.
What in the Gestapo is going on in Grand Rapids?

Watch this activist get arrested *mid-interview* for speaking out against U.S. action in Venezuela.

I’ll respond to this disingenuous question exactly one time.

Maduro’s rule does is immaterial to the violation of sovereignty and international law that this strike represents. Go bother someone else with this nonsense.
Do you dispute their description of maduro’s rule?

I don’t carry “immigration documents” with me at all times. Americans have not had to produce “their papers” for police without cause. Is this the new standard, given Kavanaugh stops? reason.com/2025/12/31/d...
DHS says REAL ID, which DHS certifies, is too unreliable to confirm U.S. citizenship
It's the punch line to a bad joke that started 20 years ago when Congress passed the REAL ID Act.

Along with Sinners and One Battle After Another,1 Wake Up Dead Man is one of my favorite films of the year. So I enjoyed director Rian Johnson breaking down the investigative scene in the bar in this Vanity Fair video.

timely read for me today, both on its own terms and in the larger context of "what other devices are you maybe using as a crutch in your writing?"
A late counterproposal, to a suggestion that I write "more traditional" songs. I will probably continue to edit this post as I think through the issue. But I provide some I think new and unique takes on the matter.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Reading this at the same time I’m rewatching WAKE UP DEAD MAN and at the exact moment of Blanc’s first appearance in the church, fantastic lighting through the church windows as they have the sun shine on O’Connor at a particular moment in his monologue. Gorgeous.
DIE HARD has great lighting. Look at those blues and skin tones enshrouded in darkness, we got a light blasting through smoke in the next room to give you the contrast; you wanna know why I dunk on modern blockbusters? This is why, the visual poverty, the fear of lighting a set properly
