I was today years old when I learned you can turn off the iPhone "Always On Display" www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/...
TL;DR In the Settings application, go to Display & Brightness, scroll down to the bottom and go into Always On Display. To turn off AOD, toggle off Always On Display.
