All politics are local, so here are some things that might primarily be of interest to locals in #somervillema but also others.

First, there was a mayoral candidate forum on Monday night. The video is now online. I think it's pretty representative of each candidate's style and positions […]

The billionaire media is laying off great tech journalists in crazy quantities this year - replacing them with AI and sycophants. This would be a great time to throw some dollars, euros, pounds, or dollarydoos to @flipboard.com/@404media, @ProPublica or another independent outlet.

It occurs to me that there is plenty of time between now and March 1st to ask a city council or town meeting to put in place a new eviction moratorium, given how many neighbors are impacted by ICE kidnappings (making it unsafe to go to work, etc., and having knock-on effects for ppl regardless […]

Well, everyone, you can now submit a comment to let the FCC know what you think about SpaceX asking for 1 million satellites for "AI datacenters" whatever the fuck that means.

Comments due March 6.

This is just to say that Angela Davis was the narrator for the 2022 audiobook of her autobiography. Stellar work, very moving, and timely reading. Hearing it in her own voice: highly recommended.

Most of my scifi friends probably already saw this go by earlier this month, but for those who don't read Chuck Wendig's blog every day, I can recommend this rant on why AI is shit and advocating for its use in any art genre is basically bullshit. (He's in convo w/a letter published to File 770 […]

I really love the idea that we can believe all actors in the government are following court orders and not reviewing whatever they can get their hands on. Unfortunately ...? 😭

Naturally, I couldn't move for hours. I did manage to get this pic, though, for the sake of posterity.

This is how she normally behaves as I'm going to sleep, not when I'm waking up. Proof that we should all be sleeping more, clearly. #catsofmastodon #cats

Idk if others on here do #yearcompass, but I do. This year, I added a few extra bits and bobs to what I'm thinking about, and I blogged it on my website. Just thought I'd put it out there in case it's helpful.

2025-2026 YearCompass Extras
Around the end of December/beginning of January, I try to complete the exercises in the YearCompass workbook. It helps me assess how the past year went and what I’m trying to accomplish in the year to come. In the past, this has helped me decide to push forward with publishing a book (Recognize Fascism), apply to grad school, and make a quilt. I almost always add extra exercises to my YearCompass, in addition to the workbook published for free online. I thought it might be helpful to post a short roundup of those extras for others, too. First off, I really like the photo-focused year review put together by Struthless on YouTube. That was pretty fun to use, last year and this year. (The link to Struthless’ doc is in the video description if you just want to use the document but not watch a video. I really enjoy his videos, though!) A lot of my added content this year is stuff I prompted myself to think about, and I thought I’d share it here, as well. **On the World Stage This Year:** Things that happened this past year that weren’t in my personal life per se but impacted me emotionally/financially/etc. **Frequent Flyer Events on the Calendar:** What was part of my routine this year on a regular basis? What grounded me? This is kinda the opposite of page 4 (which is about looking for big events or significant projects from last year’s calendar). **Followups from 2025:** As I went through my 2025 calendar, I made a list of things that I intended to do but didn’t manage and might want to do in 2026. A meeting I should reschedule, a chore I want to do more regularly, a project I forgot wasn’t finished, making vet appointments for the cats, etc. **2025 Stressor List:** What stressed me out in 2025 that I might want to do or see less of in 2026? **Who Do I Want to Be Proud of Me?** Beyond people who influence me or are influenced by me, who do I want to be proud of me when I’m doing stuff this coming year? **Bingo Card Options:** If I were making a Bingo card for 2026, what might I want to put in the spaces and try to do for fun? **2026 Pasta Quest:** What’s a fun adventure thing I want to do when the opportunity strikes? (Based on this Instagram post from a few years ago.) **People to Call or Take Walks With:** I periodically need to remind myself that I have friends; most of them are just not local. Sometimes listing them out prompts me to call or text them when I’m lonely. I wasn’t great at keeping in touch with friends in 2025, so I particularly want to work on this next year. **Other Questions:** What’s something physical I want to accomplish in 2026? What’s something intellectual I want to accomplish in 2026? What goals do I have that need some scaffolding in order to be successful? This is the cover of this year’s YearCompass, for me. Lots of stickers. ### Please feel free to share this: * Click to share on X (Opens in new window) X * Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Like Loading...

There are just some numbers that I avoid having in my stuff. Like, I know what N*zis are and I avoid owning 88 of anything (even in a computer game) because of them.

Is this neurospicy or is it common? I can no longer tell how weird I am. 😅

It's almost 2026. I'm still invested in the following:

Not ever getting covid.
Not ever using ChatGPT.
December 29, 2025 at 8:36 AM
I'm worried that there are a lot of people who don't understand or even know about the prisoner's dilemma. I'm not gonna check, but I bet ChatGPT isn't gonna explain it to them correctly, either.

This toot is about the environment.
