The need for science to be ethically pure is simply ahistorical. That may be neither here nor there from a present-day science comms perspective, but it can hardly be required of those of us trying to understanding the past. Though I think it stifles critical engagement with science in the present.

Just finished 'The Young Karl Marx' (2017), and my take away from it is how much worse living conditions were for the working class then than they are now. You can easily imagine feeling the misery, whereas the present polycrisis is still very much an abstraction for the same group of communities.

It's a great word fact that English 'lord' comes from a compound meaning 'bread guard', which fused into one word: Old English hlāford.

There's evidence from Norway that the concept was an old one, as the Tune runestone (c. 400 AD) mentions the role of "witadahalaiban" – 'the one watching bread'.

On this day in 1997 the Anti-Landmine Treaty was signed in Ottawa. Ukraine has in recent years been violating the Treaty, having being supplied by non-member the US, and withdrew from the Treaty this year. Several Baltic NATO states have withdrawn recently, in blatant disregard for harm to civilians

The withdrawal of five European countries from a longstanding and effective international treaty prohibiting antipersonnel landmines unnecessarily puts civilians at risk.

This article provides more data showing how easy it is to manipulate humans on social media.

These researchers rerouted the algorithm on Twitter to push some users toward “antidemocratic attitudes and partisan animosity”.

It only took 1 week to elicit changes that used to take 3 years.
Reranking partisan animosity in algorithmic social media feeds alters affective polarization
Today, social media platforms hold the sole power to study the effects of feed-ranking algorithms. We developed a platform-independent method that reranks participants’ feeds in real time and used thi...

I'm not sure if I will read this book, because I hate horror movies, even so reading this review was well worth my time. I've long wondered what the appeal of horror is, and this text puts the finger on what I see as a foundational point.

A false narrative is being pushed about GrapheneOS claiming we're ending operations in France due to the actions of 2 newspapers. That's completely wrong. If both newspapers and the overall French media had taken our side instead of extreme bias against us, we'd still be leaving.
