C'mon guys. Cells show blebbing and death was inhibited by caspase inhibitors and had mitochondrial permeabilization.
In my alternate universe, this is apoptosis 🙄

"Consistently, time-lapse imaging of elesclomol-treated and FECH knockout or inhibited OCI-AML3 cells showed membrane blebbing, a morphologic feature induced downstream of caspase-3 activation in apoptosis"

Why is this not apoptosis?

I object to the title.
"Surprisingly, the pan-caspase inhibitor emricasan also partially rescued NMP- and elesclomol-induced killing. These observations suggest leakage of mitochondrial contents, such as cytochrome c or Smac, caused by NMP and elesclomol activating the caspase cascade. "

Bacterial effector OspB hijacks apoptosis through peptide-bond recombination of BH3 domain proteins
Shao et al. show that the Shigella effector OspB blocks apoptosis by enzymatically remodeling host BCL-2 proteins through peptide-bond recombination. This reveals a unique pathogen strategy to rewire ...
