Fascism came to the US wrapped in an American flag. Fascism came to Canada with a polite smile and hockey slogans.
Great response.
There's a lot of daylight between the Carney we heard at Davos – calling out the US’s exercise of naked power and shredding the so-called rules-based international order – and the Carney who has repeatedly capitulated to Trump since taking office.

My conversation with Ryan Jespersen this morning.

What I wish American left-wing political commentators would understand about Carney and Canadian politics right now.
We can all cross our fingers that he finally figured out that bending to a bully is the worst way to deal with them, they view it as weakness. If he has that is fantastic, then we only have to hassle him about destroying the environment and burning down our public services!

I would love to see Carney put into action both his campaign and Davos proclamations. But his revolutionary rhetoric, to date, has been matched with domestic tinkering and a refusal to take necessary steps (especially expanding, not contracting, the public service) to follow through on his words.

So, there's a strategy available for dealing with the rogue US.

* Boycott
* Divest
* Sanction

Also,

* Call in their debt
* Kick out their military bases
* Require visas for American travelers
* Form new alliances and trade partnerships without them
* Move UN headquarters

Really good speech from Carney at the World Economic Forum today.

Genuinely gives the impression he understands the gravity of the moment, which is why I'm struggling to square it with his actual actions and policy re: the United States.

The surreal part of this moment of global change is that we have the internet during it, which makes it so that anyone from almost anywhere can talk to one another and say "I have nothing against you and I don't want this to happen."

"Carney's actions aren't in line with his words" is a sentiment I completely agree with.

When viewed as prioritizing Canada as a nation comprised of people.

When viewed as prioritizing Canada as a nation comprised of corporate interests, the actions make more sense.

Renee Good, they are increasingly stopping this observation, breaking car windows and pulling observers out, in one case unconscious, merely for watching what they are doing.
The country should be alarmed they won't stop with us - but know that while this is traumatizing to any good person you know

Anyone who joins Trump's genocide board will forever have blood on their hands
Prime Minister Mark Carney has been asked to join Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” for Gaza’s reconstruction.

And so far Carney hasn’t ruled out joining — in fact, CBC is reporting he’s going to accept.

When you hear the details of this “board,” you probably won’t be happy about that:

Deeply disturbing that according to US "news" that Trump's focus is on Canada again and taking the Canadian arctic. There needs to be a coalition against US aggression yesterday.

No need to wonder. Clear goals:

1) Exploitation of Gaza genocide for profit.

2) Extort $1 billion annually from member countries.

3) Expand to other conflicts (for profit and to undermine UN and hand more power to US).

There's no possibility of negotiation. Appeasement will not work. The USA is a fascist rogue state and a threat to everyone, including all former allies. The the rest of the world need to start act accordingly.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

A massive "Hands off Greenland" protest is happening right now in Copenhagen to demonstrate against Trump's threats.

"The aim is to send a clear and unified message of respect for Greenland's democracy," organisers said.

“Respect for Greenland, respect for Greenlanders, respect for Denmark.”

As scathing as I will be to criticize this government, I will give credit where credit is due. I am relieved to finally see shifts in Canadian foreign policy. US enemies are not our enemies. Imports of green tech are also hopeful if they happen. Thawing US-led antagonism is good.
On a high-stakes trade mission to China, Mark Carney signed off on a series of agreements that renewed trade ties, as the prime minister basked in a warm welcome he said marks a “new era.”

The Star's Ottawa bureau chief Tonda MacCharles reports from Beijing
Mark Carney kicks off China trip with series of deals as both countries tout renewal of ‘strategic partnership’
Most were renewals of non-binding agreements that had languished during the big chill in Canada-China relations for much of the past eight years.
