Surprise! NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona is seen as one of the best classic NASCAR games, but it always had a downside of being locked to 30 FPS.
This changes today: I uncapped the physics simulation updates, achieving perfect 60 FPS, just like Heat 2002 did.

I will have to benchmark NASCAR 25 at 1440p - because at 1080p, a full 40-car race leans so heavily on the CPU, I am CPU bottlenecked (on a few threads) on both Low and Highest details!
Left - Low, right - Highest

Admission time: I only ever played the demos of NFS Most Wanted, never the full game.

Downsides: TSR is forced at all quality options
Upside #1: With "Dynamic Resolution" disabled, it appears to be running at a 100% resolution so there's no temporal upscaling artifacts
Upside #2: I can disable AA entirely, downsample, and it looks super nice, but maxes the GPU.

NASCAR 25 may be blocking the Unreal console, but at least it doesn't block Engine.ini overrides, so worst case I can figure out the scaling and AA methods by eye.

things used to be so simple

It's so refreshing to see a clean, smooth game without any temporal effects and high quality, detailed mirrors. No ghosting, no jittering, no building effects over multiple frames.

Did you know that there was a Wii that used wired Wii Remotes, couldn't be accessed by players, yet could swap between 22 retail titles? In our latest feature article, we look at the weird, the wonderful, the Starlight Wii.

It runs well! I'll note that I didn't see extensive options for things like lighting and global illumination. There were only options for dynamic and screen-space reflections. You'd obviously have a better sense of what is going on under the hood, but I think the result looks great.

Sounds promising! I'm slightly more interested now.

Motor-cycle Festival?

Or maybe

Motor-Fest?

Graphically, it looks very simple even when maxed out, and options are as simple as it gets. No AA options, no upscalers (only a nondescript 'dynamic resolution'), nothing beyond the default options. I can't check for Lumen/CVars due to anti-tamper smacking me for code injection.

Looks like I will be able to replace my Deck docked to the TV with a Steam Machine! Depending on the price, it might be a really interesting pick.
Announcing: New @steampowered.com Hardware, coming in 2026:

NASCAR 25 appears to refuse to run on Steam Deck/Proton due to the use of some packer that either fails, or doesn't even attempt to unpack under Proton. Nasty; I don't blame them for protecting the game executable, but it would be nice if Deck/Linux didn't suffer in the process.

Ready to give a more modern NASCAR game a try, and maybe write another tech review? It's a UE5.5 game, and Monster Games' first UE5 game, so I'm curious.

Hey I was in Japan last week and got to play so much good shit.

Gigo 3 let me play a ton of racing games for the first time, including Dirt Dash and Thrill Drive. Some went better than others but I could have spent four times as long here. Cameo by @kylempatrick.bsky.social on Scud Race there.
