The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Abolish ICE is not enough.

Stern words for Greg Bovino or Kristi Noem is not enough.

We need prosecutions and trials.

Anything short of this position fails to address the gravity of this moment.

Naming someone is not doxxing. They aren’t undercover. They aren’t intelligence agents overseas. This is outrageous - we are supposed to be a free Republic and these people want an authoritarian police state. Lawsuits should be filed & ranking Dems in Congress should act.

Before speaking with two armed men at the Pretti vigil last night, a man approached & asked if I was going to tell the truth. I said yes. He told me how frustrated he was at the media & the harm it’s causing to his community.

I asked if he wanted to share words for the media on camera, & he did:

I ended the night as the guest of queer, observant Jews who have been organizing nonstop against ICE.

Observant Muslims fed us and everyone else at protests.

An indigenous organizer spoke to us of the creator.

Every church we saw had messages of inclusion and antifascism on their marquees.

It should freak the American people out that Trump, Noem and Bovino lie so enthusiastically. He wasn't "brandishing a weapon". He wasn't attending a "riot" or "interfering in a crime scene". He was an ICU nurse exercising his constitutional rights.

We saw what we saw.

Murphy on Bovino: "That was a bone-chilling interview. I was shaking while I was listening to it, in large part bc it takes just an unbelievable amount of gall to lie to the American public. Everybody saw that video ... it should freak the public out that the Trump administration lies this easily"

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

The shamelessness is the point. We know she's lying. She knows she's lying. If she were trying to convince the public, that would be admitting that public opinion matters.

This is a performance of dominance.

This is "truth is what we say it is."

This is "you'll believe what we tell you."
Noem lies shamelessly: "An individual approached order Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic gun. The officers attempted to disarm this individual, but the armed suspect reacted violently. This looks like a situation where an individual arrived to inflict maximum damage and kill law enforcement"

None of this even starts to get better until our news media starts acknowledging, in print and on TV, the simple objective fact, with video evidence to prove it, that the secretary of Homeland security flat out lied about what happened. There isn’t a “dispute” or “controversy.” She just lied.

On his trip to MN yesterday, Vance said DHS wasn’t targeting people based on race.

Not only is that false, remember, this Admin took a case to SCOTUS specifically arguing they should be allowed to do that.

Trump’s SCOTUS ruled in their favor.

Don't be fooled by their lies.

Another question I came here with was: how effective are the whistles and honking? Does it stop abductions? And the answer is, surprisingly to my cynical self, yes, and often. I have talked to so many people who have successfully interrupted kidnappings.

All but one have AIPAC as their biggest donor. (And it's their second biggest donor.) Israel loves ICE. Massie is one of few congressmen in either party who refuses money from AIPAC.

There's nothing "moderate" about voting to give billions more to Trump's lawless and murderous secret police force. This is a morally repugnant and politically reckless vote by members who embarrass and weaken the Democratic Party.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.
