Sad to think we'll probably never see Rent-a-Hero turned into a story about a Silicon Valley tech start-up, described as "Uber for heroes"
A paragraph from a page on the Empire website about the planned Rent-a-Hero movie, which was announced in 2016. Literally zero news about the film has surfaced since. "[Steve] Pink and co-writer Jeff Morris are turning that basic concept into the idea of a slacker genius joining a tech start-up which bills itself as "Uber for heroes." But when he and some of his comrades learn that the company bigwigs are planning to weaponise the technology involved, they team up to stop that happening. “As SEGA fans, we are excited to dive into the near future with these Rent A Heroes, and explore what it means to be an everyday hero in a comedic, high-energy, action adventure,” Pink says in a statement carried by The Hollywood Reporter." Went back and made both the character movement and dirt systems significantly more efficient; I think all that's really left are the enemy AI (which is apparently weirdly difficult to do in GameMaker?) and being able to push multiple apples at once. #gamedev #indiedev

If there's one lesson, any lesson, that the current "quadruple-A" game industry could take from the European microcomputer world, it's that there should be way, WAY more Mr. Do! clones

Encountered quite possibly the most mysterious Ms. Pac-Man cabinet in my life, which completely refused to allow me to collect any fruit, lacked the cutscenes, and also had the title of "SUPER PAC-MAN" show up at one point in the maze for seemingly no reason? I fear this cab. It terrifies me

Sadly, I did not have enough time to get a Cosmic Avenger run going.

Honestly, considering this cabinet's "throw ball" button was completely busted, this run could've gone SO much worse than it did. Unfortunately, the cabinet's joystick was far too loose to really play the game properly, which is especially bad considering Lady Bug probably demands the absolute tightest movement of any golden-age maze game. Seeing as this was a location I hadn't been to before, I basically made it a mission to make sure I played as much of the games that weren't at the Bury location, including such classics as Trog and Atari Batman
The high-score screen for the 1991 Bally/Midway arcade game, Trog (in PLAYmation!); present at number 8 on the "Top Trogs" list and number 1 in the "Daily Dinos" list is "BUM" with 1,698,883 points. I could've probably kept this run going for longer, but I'm entirely not sure if I want to be regarded as a Trog Expert. Atari Batman is a game that dares to ask the question all of us were thinking, but were too afraid to ask: "what if Rolling Thunder was STUPID?" I have never regarded myself as being particularly good at Qix, but according to this screen I am apparently the best Qix player in the area. I'm the most far-out player there is.

I finally got to play Space Panic on a real cabinet, although perhaps in a less-than-ideal manner; some of the sprite colors are switched around for some reason? Bad graphics/palette ROM or something?

I think this is the one and only place I've ever actually seen an exA-Arcadia cabinet, and I imagine that's going to be true for a very long time.

If you're wondering, no, I didn't play it. I have PRINCIPLES
A lineup of SEGA Blast City candy cabs running Bubble Symphony, Die Hard Arcade, R-Type Leo, Progear/Progear no Arashi, and SoulCalibur. An exA-Arcadia cabinet running DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou exA Label; sitting next to it is a Star Wars Trilogy Arcade cab.

They have a section of the building specifically dedicated to fighting games, including the Street Fighter II pinball table, which, uh, sure... Is. At least it worked, which is more than can be said for the Gottlieb Mario table they have at the Bury location.
Cabinets for the original Street Fighter (not one of the pressure-sensitive button cabs, unsurprisingly), regular-ass Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (housed in a Champion Edition cab), and Hyper Fighting lined up in a row (not pictured: candy cabs running SFIV and Marvel vs. Capcom 2). Cabinets for the first two Virtua Fighter games (not pictured: Tekken 3, which stands right next to these cabs, and Virtua Fighter 3tb, which is present elsewhere in the building). A line-up of all four arcade Mortal Kombats, sadly placed against a wall. Supposedly, the Blackpool location is the one you want for real side-art Quan-Chi joy. The Gottlieb Street Fighter II pinball table, which is truly a thing of... something beauty-adjacent. Someday, I will defeat Chun-Li's despicable game of darts(???).

The pinball selection isn't quite as plentiful as in the Bury location, but I think there's definitely enough unique pins here to warrant visiting if you're some kinda PINBALL FREAK. It's got Medieval Madness!

Duel to the death between the Fucked-Up Horizontal PS1 Bootscreen and the Fucked-Up Early Genesis Emulator Sonic 1 Title Screen
A JPEG of the title screen for the original Sonic the Hedgehog, as it would be seen in the early days of SEGA Genesis emulation; as a result of incorrect layering, Sonic is overlapping the ribbon displaying the game's title. If you look closely you can also see GIF dithering/artifacting throughout the image. The official GameStop Instagram account posted this exact image in June of 2025 to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the game's release. How is this emulation error still being circulated.

YouTube occasionally recommends me these fake "emergency alert scenarios" and I tend to find them vaguely off-putting, but for some reason, I am enamored with the idea that a TV station would have a specific alert for this Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs-ass situation
