thank you bad bunny for highlighting the importance of critical power distribution infrastructure bsky.app/profile/cost...
It’s the weekend everyone, so you know what that means. Time to drink two polar seltzers and do a thread on the power transformer shortage. Without transformers, we don’t get a clean energy transition. And as energysky knows, there’s been a shortage due to covid, supply chain, & labor constraints 🔌🔋

Two new solar records today in Texas/ERCOT:

🏆 first time over 30,000 megawatts
☀️first time over 58% of supply

Quite the progression:

2015: 500 megawatts
2017: 1,000 megawatts
2021: 5,000 megawatts
2022: 10,000 megawatts
2024: 15,000 megawatts
Feb. 2026: 30,000 megawatts!!

One expects California to set winter solar records - but damn man - 117% of demand being met by solar in …checks notes…FEBRUARY!
It's the dead of winter, and California just supplied a peak of 117% of its demand with solar alone and 136% of its demand from WindWaterSolar and over 100% of demand for 6 hours.

Gas output down 58% and batteries output up 303% in 2025 v '2023

Imagine! How could wind and solar ever compete with fossil fuel electricity across an entire year, across an entire block of 450 million people!?😉

The average driver in the US spends around US $1,900 a year on gasoline (13,700 miles).

We spend about $320 charging our EV at home.

EVs are spreading to more and more countries.

Look at Indonesia - in December 2025 these are the shares of new car sales:

- 35.3% battery electric vehicles (BEVs)
- 1.7% plug in hybrids
- 63.0% ICE vehicles

Now on steep slopes of the S-curve.

Will AI and data centres be the main drivers of future electricity demand?

No. The biggest drivers will be the electrification of industry, transport and buildings. When powered by clean electricity, the benefits are fundamental: vastly higher efficiency, dramatically lower emissions & cleaner air.

But there's no "natural" demand for EVs amirite?

Gold just went above $5,000 per troy ounce. It only crossed $4,000 in October. For the first time since the debasement trade started, this coincides with Dollar weakness, which super-charges this rise. My piece from today on everything to know about gold:

Electric vehicles with off-grid solar are competitive with or cheaper than old style petrol/gaslone vehicles in many African countries before 2030; and cheaper in all countries by 2040 - often by a wide margin. That's even allowing for (high) financing costs. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
