If he had been convicted, they still would have had to have an impeachment trial, nothing is automatic. Although he was removed from the judiciary, he went on to serve in Congress for a loooooong time. Being booted from judiciary does not bar other federal office unlike presidential impeachment.

I had to look it up b/c I was vague on the details of Alcee Hastings, b it he was from my neck of the woods in Florida and I was in jr high when they started his impeachment proceedings. He was acquitted of bribery by the courts, but impeached by congress for perjury and soliciting a bribe.
