Good morning to all the new followers here! By way of introduction, I’m a sociologist who studies young people, masculinity, sexuality and education. My new book is about what happens when schools ban political topics and instead tell everyone to just...be nice. www.ucpress.edu/books/nice-i...

I worked for a bit in a district where “nice” was one of the top characteristics parents wanted students to have. It was often code for conformity.

Do “No Kings” Protests Work in Places Where Trump Is Indeed King?
In a conservative stronghold, I found a lot to be hopeful about—and plenty of reasons to worry.

I’m getting to serve as a faculty advisor to a class of LGBTQIA+ first year students this year (so exciting!) and I need your help! I’d love to assign some inspirational/uplifting/ affirming essays, films, and poetry. I know that you folks must have some fabulous ideas, so please send them my way!

All I have to say about Dobson's passing is that the public policy team at Focus on the Family sent me a going away gift basket when I moved away from CSprings. Even after I declined to star in a video for first year Christian college students about how to get along with their secular professors.

I get that we can't self care our way out of this. But this morning message from the YMCA coffee counter is a little too on point for me and my colleagues at U of O who are facing unprecedented, unpredictable and unclear firings of staff, tenured and nontenured faculty.

It's not surprising that the pastor gave this sermon during a "Men's Preaching Night" event. As @cjpascoe.bsky.social told us in her research almost 20 years ago, straight men use homophobia to police each other's masculinity.

As I said in my blurb: The High School takes us on a compelling historical journey, offering a unique blend of sociology, history and personal memoir…A brilliant and insightful work that may have many of us digging out our own yearbooks and revisiting our own stories. Check it out!
How cool is Mike Messner’s new book?! It looks like a yearbook and it’s based on 100+ years of yearbooks!

Indiana will promise the Trump administration there’s no DEI in the state’s schools
The U.S. Department of Education has asked states to certify there’s no DEI in schools in ways the Trump administration deems illegal. Indiana says it will comply.

This is all horrifying, so all my little peabrain can focus on is that I am absolutely not prepared to be suitably professorial in 80+ degree temps next week.

Somehow all the students who showed up to one of my Transforming Identities seminars yesterday were international students. So we did some close reading of a few ethnographic vignettes from @cjpascoe.bsky.social's Nice Is Not Enough together, as if it's an English class. It's such a fun experience!

For a more recent analysis of gender, sexuality and educational outcomes check out Nice Is Not Enough, which provides updates on a lot of the dynamics I documented in Dude - which can feel a little far from some students' lived experiences these days :). www.ucpress.edu/books/nice-i...
If you're teaching gender, sexuality, and educational outcomes, highly recommend pairing DiPrete & Buchmann's first chapter in the The Rise of Women, @joeljm.bsky.social (2022)'s paper (ungated below) , and @cjpascoe.bsky.social's book, Dude, You're a Fag.

Today I learned that some buildings on campus post signs noting the name & time of each course taught outside the classroom in which they are taught. I learned this because five or so men gathered around/pointed at said sign during the middle of my Sex & Society class.

I heard about @cjpascoe.bsky.social's book Nice is Not Enough on here and finally had the chance to read this fabulous piece of work. So many smart things to say about the limits (& I'd say dangers) of kindness as a framework for addressing inequity. 📚💙
