i'm thankful that, despite everything, that project still exists, and we're not stuck with only trivial variations of googlebrowser, and toy projects that are really broken

We're doing the next @atproto.london at Newspeak House on 28 January, it's been like 3 months since our last one so I want a solid lineup of talks. Will announce soon but figured I'd put out an early RFP.

If you want to do a talk about something ATProto-related at the next event, please ping me!

This idea of "thin empathy" and "thick empathy" from @mjcrockett.bsky.social is lighting up my brain this morning. It's an intriguing model. We've built a world where chances for thin empathy abound, but thick empathy remains hard to come by.

I need to read that preprint today.
"We face a social dilemma around the role of these empathy machines. Those who are most cognitively vulnerable may turn to these tools when what they most need is a flesh-and-blood human who will care for them, not sycophantically, but with thick empathy arising from the experience of being human."

I love this. One of the more annoying trends among the more genuinely pro-decentralization crypto crowd is a tendency to view blockchains as the only good infrastructure for it

Speaking from experience, building on ATProto and building on an EVM chain each have their own strengths and weaknesses.
good conclusion!

hope this framing helps folks chose the right tool for the job

Global spam filters are a bit of a cop out imo. They give you the worst of both worlds
- when they’re too aggressive they frequently result in false positives
- when they’re too lax they’re not very useful

The reality is that spam is relative and our content filters should reflect that

People don't like to think in these terms bc they want to sort people into categories of good and bad, and manufacture safety or ideal political outcomes on those terms, and that doesn't actually work. I'm not making excuses for people btw. I am talking about how different outcomes actually happen.

3 @germnetwork.com cards: 1 that links to your atproto handle for people you want to know more about you, 1 with your full name to give out to randos who can google you if they want to, 1 with no name for randos who you never actually want to see again
3 @leaflet.pub blogs: one at work where you hone your hashtag thought leadership, one with friends where you form a hyperniche webring and share all the good shit, one a node in the emergent atmosphere-blogosphere where you go so deep you recreate the best of the early web from first principles
3 fantasy leagues: One at work where you can side text w your colleagues about your boss’s awful trade proposals, one with your high school friends with a group chat where no one ever talks about their personal lives, one 14 team dynasty league that’s so deep you end up streaming Tyler Allgeier

I honestly think that many people don't know what their public libraries offer besides books. I think that everyone should go on a public library treasure hunt in 2026. Go explore what your library systems offer at no cost to you. Report back to me :)
“I miss blockbuster video” the library has every dvd totally untouched and I never see you there
