¡Hola! from Spain, where my sister-in-law gave us an entire Iberian ham for Christmas this year, so we look forward to taking it out of the packaging, securing it in a wooden frame, & starting "quality testing" 😋

When being trained as a copyeditor I was told to prefer using one word to using two -- so why say "Elon Musk’s operatives *shook up* several US government agencies" when the one-word solutions of *destroyed* and *decimated* (depending on which agency) are right there?

Hi, assuming that some folks reading this thread like reading classic ghost stories at Christmas time: Any recommendations other than (the gold standard) M.R. James?

I just finished re-re-re-reading (it's become an annual thing) A Christmas Carol in Tim Curry's audiobook version & he really does a great job of bringing out the considerable (& masterful) horror that Dickens put into it.

Cue the music! (The way she nails the A5 at the end is what first inspired teen me to take voice lessons; I knew I had to learn how to do that)

"Blurring the lines between business and government"... "policies picking winners and losers"... if only there were a one-word political term to describe such a system...

Of course, a crucial part of maintaining time & measurement standards is official agencies with highly-qualified civil servants whose jobs don't depend on the whims of shifting electoral fancy. It's easy to underestimate how the majority of voters don't comprehend how their lives can depend on this.

Most people have no idea how much we all depend on having officially sanctioned national/international time & measurement standards so that critical infrastructure works properly. The DOGE rampage of 2025 that took an ax to so many things in the USA is going to have long-term after-effects.

We had our annual re-watch of A MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL today & for the 1st time I clocked that in the penultimate number Scrooge visits Sam The Eagle in a retirement home where he's hanging with Fozziwig.

I love John Klemmer. "Barefoot Ballet" is on the top 10 of jazz albums I've listened to the most times in my life.

When we lived in NYC (3rd floor) we had the occasional mouse or roach in the kitchen, but our only encounters with rats (again, way too frequent & I just could never get blasé about it) were street level.

Try to buy good used clothing (I realize not everyone can easily find their size, but the average person can). You'll get a bigger bang for your buck.

We live in Madrid, where a combo of high-ish altitude (666 meters, famously), dry-ish climate & good municipal cleaning services means that rats aren't A Thing, but when we spent 6 mo. in NYC (near Marcus Garvey Park), daily encounters with rats never ceased to startle me 🐀
