Winning Pascal's Wager; wearing many hats (literally/figuratively); Paddington & Caligari stan.
Cue the music...
Wow. I posted Van Eyck's monumental "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb", a masterpiece of 15th-c Catholic art, but got slapped with an "Adult Content" label & the image removed from my post. It's a very beautiful artwork & easily viewable on Wikipedia or any other site that features Flemish painting.

Anyone doing the dirty work of ICE is on Santa's "Despicable" list.

We had our annual re-watch of A MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL today & for the 1st time I clocked that in the penultimate number Scrooge visits Sam The Eagle in a retirement home where he's hanging with Fozziwig.

I'm really enjoying the latest installment from the @britishlibrary.bsky.social Crime Classics series of reprints, "Death in Ambush", a Yuletide murder mystery by Susan Gilruth. It had me hooked from page 1.

This portrait of Pietro Maria Rossi, Count of San Secondo, by Parmigianino, painted in the 1530s, is in the Prado Museum, near where I live. Whenever I take visitors there, I always swing by show them the Count, who is hung (so to speak) on a wall facing his Countess, Camilla Gonzaga, & their sons.

Remember, kids, when slashed hose & massive codpieces were all the range amongst the "manly men" set?

MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S is one of the great Christmas movies & the best film ever made about winning Pascal's wager. The last scene is a personal all-time favorite for me.

I worked for 15 years as a copyeditor/translator for the Spanish Institute of Oceanography & my favorite fish fact I learned is that Boops boops (/ˈboʊ.ɒps/; Greek: βόωψ boōps, literally "cow-eye"), commonly called a bogue, is the scientific name of a species of delicious eastern Atlantic seabream.

Nothing says "Yuletide in Brussels" like a festive municipal space featuring Christmas trees decorated with beer cans 🎄🍻

Wandering around Brussels, we found a vegan café called LUCIFER LIVES, decorated entirely with horror film memorabilia 🧟‍♂️
Belgium: Keeping it surreal since 1924.

Ya gotta love the Belgians. Even when it's cold & rainy, if they've planned a party in the street (as today, for the Feast of St. Nicholas), a whole lot of folks are going to show up to party.

Pantone's choice of what is literally a shade of white as its Color of the Year 2026 seems a bit on the nose.

I live in Spain & last week took a high-speed train, Madrid to Oviedo and back, for 64 euros. It was a comfy 3-hr trip (half the time than by auto & a lot less than by plane when you include the whole airport thing); we had a craft beer in the cafe car & watched a movie (with earbuds, of course).

I found your words very moving & thought-provoking, so thanks for sharing. (Full disclosure: I'm Catholic, so the community of saints is a daily part of my spiritual practice, but your reflection gave me a way to look at that relationship with fresh eyes, which is always good, especially at Advent.)

THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE. Director Siodmak & cinematographer Musuraca craft the ultimate single-setting stormy-night thriller occurring almost in real time. Dorothy McGuire stands out in a cast of RKO stalwarts (Brent! Kent Smith!) as the Final Girl

Happy Thanksgiving! In our house, the ultimate apple for baking is the Reineta Gris, which I believe is also called a Reinette.

ANNIE HALL is known by its original title in Spain (where I live), but called DOS AMANTES EXTRAÑOS (literally, "two strange lovers") in some Latin American countries.
November 25, 2025 at 7:22 AM
In Spain it's called REGRESO AL FUTURO, literally "return to the future". (Translated movie titles can vary from one Spanish-speaking country to another, e.g. THE SOUND OF MUSIC is known as SONRISAS Y LÁGRIMAS in Spain, but LA NOVICIA REBELDE some places in South America.)
