Bonus #MovieChallenge: It Chapter Two (2019)

The characters spend a lot of time being dumb and making bad decisions and following obvious tropes and not being that interesting. But a bunch of gross fucked up shit also happens to them and that was generally fun to watch.

3/5

#MovieChallenge 2025 week 50: It (2017)

I'm reliably informed that Welcome to Derry is actually worthwhile so I rewatched these in preparation. It's nicely done. Strong cast. Super gross when it needs to be. He doesn't sound that much like Winnie-the-Pooh. Very Stephen King.

3.5/5

Watched Bullet Train. This movie is an act of tourism.
What if the entire Tarantino oeuvre got fucked by "Well *that* happened..."

4: It’s Christmas movie month, so a rewatch of “Joyeux Noël” fits
TRUE(?) STORY OF: The Christmas truce of 1914 along the western front in France.
The story of the truce itself is always cool; this movie also shows a less-repeated angle, which is how much the truce really ticked off the higher-ups

3: “Citizen Cohn”
TRUE(?) STORY OF: Roy Cohn’s career, front-loaded to focus on him during the 1950s, the Joe McCarthy years.
It’s hurt a little by being an early (1992) HBO film when their production values were sometimes iffy, but James Woods is VERY INTENSE here, which works when playing Cohn

2: “Operation Mincemeat”
TRUE(?) STORY OF: The elaborate plan to fool the Germans into thinking the 1943 invasion of Sicily was headed to Greece instead.
I liked it but there were some extra subplots that distracted from the deception. It’s a caper film, just show us how they pulled off the con!

My favorite challenge was Week 31, “True(?) Story”; all my watches were also “Two Word Titles” (Week 36)
1: “Nouvelle Vague”
TRUE(?) STORY OF: Filming “Breathless” in 1959
Richard Linklater directs and has fun with the premise that Godard had no idea what he was doing but it turned out great anyway

7: First watch of Piggy (2022). Spanish slasher, a teenager is mercilessly bullied but when the bullies go missing only she knows what happened. Spain is good at these gritty little horrors but the horror isn’t just physical in this one. 7/10

6: First watch of 28 Years Later. Week 43, Time. Happy that this didn’t disappoint. The second act slows the film up a little too much but it provides a worthwhile update to the world. Ralph Fiennes comes in and rescues it. Also, what the hell was that ending? 🤣 7/10

5: First watch of Dogtooth. Week 3 ( Five), 5 members of the family. A very surreal, disturbing film that stays with you long after it’s finished. Unfortunately, another film that is cut on streaming services. Physical media remains king. 8/10

4: First watch of The Wicker Man (2006). Actually not as bad as its reputation suggests. Full Nic Cage shows up eventually which always adds a point to a review. The only reason I watched it was for the iconic bees scene which the Prime version cut out so 5/10 👎🏻

3: First watch of Sinners. Week 29 (multiple roles). Sadly doesn’t live up to the hype. Overlong meandering set up, a weaker From Dusk Till Dawn segment and a ridiculous end sequence. Really disappointed. 6/10

First watch of Wanted: Dead Or Alive (1987). Week 35 (acting musicians) & Week 40 (Cat and Mouse). A curious 80s action film with a distinct lack of action. Rutger Hauer is a cool bounty hunter chasing Gene Simmon’s terrorist (who is as terrible as you’d expect). 5/10
