been thinking about sight-reading--after students ask: how do i get better at SR??--& made a rough schema

1. obv gotta get gud at reading notations
2. need to discern patterns quickly + "encyclopedia" of effective positions (scales, arpeggios)
3. look ahead not stuck in current playing measure

last sunday, i helped my church folx making stars in prep for epiphany

ended up chatting with 2 older folks:
- person A has some thumb issues that affected them when playing piano, so i suggested not curving the thumb at all and adjusted the distance between fingers 1 & 2

some prizes are gone/taken by today exam’s folks

but yes, i have a table full of prizes bc what is summative assessment if not a chance to celebrate student’s growth (unless said student hasn’t been practicing then 👊…)

uhhhhh you’re right

this is meant to be temporary as the prince needs to take his antibiotics with wet food
but I did think about giving them wet food regularly during winter break (and they will learn the trick)

tbf one of the first term's midterm piece options is double treble (double trouble)
December 3, 2025 at 3:02 AM
you see, just because it doesn't require the hand coordination of cowell's sway dance (pic below, same syllabus exam level/OMTA 4), it doesn't mean that students can do well without practicing the diemer's piece 😈

all my homies love emma lou diemer's clusters and dots

uhhh getting so deep into this new practice game and now I’m thinking maybe I should just generate and print a bunch of 正 stroke worksheets

diagrammed the form for the functional piano-composer class and it is actually nice to brush up my basic MT chops bc (1) lol it’s part of my job title somehow and (2) self-studying is so much easier now compared to my UG years*

*once again thankful for open music theory textbook

Japanese Pocari Sweat is a great choice.
Very big in Asia. not too sweet IMO.

You can find the non-powder version in Asian grocery stores too if you don't want to commit to buying bulk.

omg idk how i did it, but it finally worked

*got frustrated trying to make 2 columns aligning evenly on one page with small tables

one student said something about how keyboard class makes them feel good, like “wow my hands/body can make this great sound?”

and sometimes the joy of discovery eludes me in my own practice (if I get to practice). today’s organ session gave me that joy I felt when I was a kid learning pf.

working musicians against computer-processed scores that display rhythm in a large open score without proper horizontal distance/layout stretch (?) ratio between the myriad rhythmic values, and thus mess up the working musicians' sight-reading for the first time

(see ex between mm. 1 & 2)
