I do not care to listen; obloquy injures my self-esteem and I am skeptical of praise.
Can I get an amen?

I lived in a time when we didn't have measles or polio to worry about, and frankly, I'd like to return to those times so that future generations don't have to worry about them either.

I knew the fellowship was in trouble when he left to make his solo album.

Yeah, I like that more every time I see it. The blend of religion and science fiction, and the "suggest just enough that you can fill in the rest" approach that is executed perfectly.

I like a lot of Carpenter, and I'm not picking favourites, but that's definitely in the top tier.

I've movies with tens, and in a few cases, hundreds, of millions of dollars of effects. Not sure that any of them has been as effective at creepy as Carpenter just having water drip up, and pool on the ceiling.

Flip the negatives for the win, I guess.

Man, the production designers really nailed this set. Perfection. And by the end of this scene we've sketched out everything we need to know to the audience ready to follow.

Fuck a slow burn, this is all setup in 14 minutes, the snowball already rolling down the hill before the movie even starts.

Just the right amount of detail. Enough to draw us in, and sketch the idea, but not enough to satisfy.

Mild cognitive dissonance, after recently rewatching the first three seasons of Simon and Simon at AJ with stash appearing right off the top. Quickly balanced out by Pleasance's perfect troubled priest, and then by Victor Wong. Victor just improves everything.

it is amazing how so much tech gets unremittingly worse year on year at whatever you once used it for and less pleasant to use and more bound up with creepy politics as well as personal and environmental harms and yet also still less productive of actual goods and these are somehow great visionaries

It can be done badly, but exposure to a certain sort of analytic philosopher’s complete intolerance of undergraduate bullshit is a valuable part of any decent education.

"Police detained a 17-year-old teenage boy before releasing him the following day, and he will have to attend a course on citizenship."

I don't know, sounds like the kid knows how to be a good citizen already.
