Yes, Jared Diamond was wrong.

Rapa Nui's people did not suffer ecological and social collapse. They adapted to changed circumstances and thrived.

And they were nothing like "primitive"

Studies show how the giant statues on Rapa Nui were made and moved—and what caused the island's deforestation
Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is often portrayed in popular culture as an enigma. The rationale is clear: The tiny, remote island in the Pacific features nearly 1,000 enormous statues—the moa...

Heavy-industry sectors like cement have long struggled to decarbonise because their processes require very high temperatures.

That’s why the new Rondo Energy heat-battery project in Thailand is such a big deal - powering a cement plant with low-carbon steam.

Full text of the agreement between the federal and Alberta governments is available here: www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/bac... It's big. Strong commitments for a new pipeline to the west coast, and significant increases in climate policy stringency in AB to go along with it.
Canada-Alberta Memorandum of Understanding
PREFACE At this pivotal global moment, Canada and Alberta, working closely with Indigenous Peoples and industry, must work together cooperatively, and within their respective jurisdictions, to foster the conditions necessary for infrastructure, including pipelines, rail, power generation, a strong and integrated transmission grid, ports and other means that will unlock and grow natural resource production and transportation in Western Canada.

Almost as though a framework, a framework like the Marginal Value of Public Funds, that enables consistence and comparable welfare assessment across public programs would be valuable to a government wanting a decision-making metric. I wonder if anyone is working on that, she says knowingly.
But I do think a prerequisite to any kind of broad tax increase would be a serious cost-cutting exercise that provided tangible evidence of things being cut -- ie. you'd need to make the case that a tax increase was necessary.

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.

I disagree. We need to recognize that in our system we elect individual representatives, not captives to a party cult. They should be free to decide how to represent their riding, and can be turfed at the next election if we don't like what they do.
