Excellent father. Recovering politics and government guy. Suffering baseball fan. Here for history, Star Trek, and ridiculous takes on current events.
One of the true glories of a citizen-army (air force) is that you get kids that name their planes after Thomas Paine.

Stan Musial campaigned for JFK in 1960 and RFK in 1968. He was a life long Democrat. Tell me, was he any good at baseball?

“Fan favorite?” I must need to get out more. #STLCards

You have to love the guy who brought his Elgin with him to war.

Some fool went and said James Hatfield is the better front man (no lie), and now Dave is gonna do this to us.

Congress’s plan to conquer Canada into liberty failed, but the Continental Army did get one regiment of outstanding soldiers from the bloody mess. The 2nd Canadian Regiment aka Congress’s Own, was raised in Quebec by Col. Moses Hazen, a veteran of Roger’s Rangers.

My earliest ancestor arrived here on a ship called “Little James” and that is about the cutest.

We have several WW1 memorials in Southern Illinois. My favorite (and the most poignant) is in Herrin, IL. 55 names in two rows memorializes the men of the community who fought in the Great War. Gold stars mark the 21 who were killed in action or died in service.

The first photo was taken in 1850; the latter in 1862. A man whose service spanned 1812-1863. Little remembered today, he was 77 when the Civil War began. A key figure of the nineteenth century army.

Annual #VeteransDay post of my grandpa, his buddy, and the porcupine a farm boy from Missouri found in Remagen, Germany, March 1945.

It gets worse. He doubles down. This is the kind of person for whom ideological battles are worth more than the lives of people.

Absolutely. Gunfire spotting was on point. The army and navy FO’s earned their pay. Interestingly, the decision to lean on FO’s was something Bradley insisted on.

The timely arrival of Cadwalader’s Brigade and a battery of Pennsylvania artillery restored order to the field and soon drove back the advancing British, “saving the day” at Princeton. 130 Continental Marines participated in this first battle, a fitting debut for the future Corps.

In addition to the Continental Marines serving in John Cadwalader’s brigade, Pennsylvania Marines detached for duty ashore joined the attack to relieve the faltering brigade of Gen. Hugh Mercer, getting the worst of the fight with British regulars.

I don’t know why it isn’t discussed more, but the first land combat of the Continental Marines occurred at Princeton on January 3, 1777. Originally slated to participate in the raid on Trenton, the brigade to which they were attached failed to make the river crossing due to heavy ice floes.

Only POTUS in a pimp coat.

The men who joined the U.S. Army from 1863-65 have long been regarded as men who lacked the patriotic fervor of the Boys of ‘61 and ‘62, influenced more by enlistment bounties and fear of the draft, than love of country. Alexander Caillot offers a necessary corrective to that misconception.

You should build Arnold’s entire Lake Champlain fleet. Galleys and brigs. Fun.

Chorizo, masa, creamed corn, and LOTS of cheese. My boys devour this. Tis the season.

Be honest, Mike. You wouldn’t mind it so much.

I feel honored.

Oh look. Sane people are out tonight. It’s always a sign that Dems are having a good night when both Republicans and online leftists are bitching.

I have not read this book—it does look interesting though—but I would like to thank “Dennis” for giving me a good laugh tonight. It seems he was seeking Ambrose and got something..else.
