Three major respiratory viruses COVID-19, RSV & flu still drive hospitalizations yearly. A new review of 511 studies shows current vaccines work. COVID-19 mRNA shots targeting XBB.1.5 cut hospitalizations by ~46–50%; newer KP.2-adapted vaccines reached 68% effectiveness.

How does life evolve to adapt to modern cities?

Out now in Science, my PhD work with @lindymcbr.bsky.social uncovers the ancient origin of the “London Underground mosquito” – one of the most iconic examples of urban adaptation.

Wintry scenes from the kitchen window today. It's warmed up a bit since this afternoon, up to 6.2C, but still pretty chilly out there this evening. The snowline has also, alas, retreated up the hillsides again.

I got the newer LP8.1 version of the Covid vaccine at Omnicare Pharmacy (Causewayside, Edinburgh: cost £85 since LP8.1 is only available privately in the UK). Most pharmacy websites don't say what Covid vaccines they provide 😠, so I phoned to check. omnicarepharmacy.co.uk/covid-vaccin...

mRNA vaccines saved 20 million lives in a global pandemic and the technology is opening up new avenues for the treatment of deadly cancers. This is really one of the most impactful scientific developments of our time.

COVID mRNA vaccines also cause cancers to become sensitive to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). buff.ly/GEfJ5Zl

First-hand account of the precarious state of the NHS (in SE England in this case) despite the efforts of hard-working staff. Cutting the number of NHS England hospital beds by 50% since 1987 is a major contributing factor to the current problems.
New post just out:

I had not realised that Uganda was coming close to releasing a mosquito gene drive. This is a pretty balanced account of the dilemmas, but should have dealt with vaccines (not mentioned) and *international* regulation. The mosquitoes will not respect local, regional or national boundaries!

Maldives becomes the first country to achieve ‘triple elimination’ of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B
In a landmark public health achievement, WHO has validated the Maldives for eliminating mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of hepatitis B, while maintaining its earlier validation (in 2019) for EMTCT of HIV and syphilis. This makes the Maldives the first country in the world to achieve ‘triple elimination’.
