Activists confronted Police Chief Thomas Mills at Broadview ICE, protesting the placement of food-drive flyers on trash bins. They accused him of misleading donors and expressed anger over the wasted contributions. The protester condemned ICE as “Nazis” and criticized Mills for not taking action.

—Here’s fortune, Blazes said.
He pitched a broad coin down. Coin rang.
—Hold on, said Lenehan, till I...
—Fortune, he wished, lifting his bubbled ale.
—Sceptre will win in a canter, he said.
—I plunged a bit, said Boylan winking and drinking. Not on my own, you know. Fancy of a friend of mine.

“Highly unusual that a convicted sex trafficker gets a puppy in prison.”
Well, yeah. For that matter, I’ve never heard of a petty thief or a tax evader getting a puppy in prison. It seems like a true innovation in our corrections policy.

The drug war has mostly been a cover for other repressive things. Now it’s being used as a cover for real war. Are there still suckers who believe that plutocrats give a shit about illegal drugs? Well, regardless of that they’ll just keep pushing the “drug war” button so the media will buy in.

Another trite phrase: “the search for meaning.” In fact, the more we search, the more detached we are from meaning.

No area of social life has as many irrational people involved in it than politics. I knew someone who was militantly anti-Trump and pro-Clinton in 2016. She was very prescient in her warnings about Trump, extremely accurate. Now, about ten years later, she’s magat. A complex phenomenon, the mind.

Irrationality is a worthy object of study, as long as those who study it are willing to recognize it in themselves.

The way the media refers to “The Me Too Movement” as if feminists hadn’t been talking about rape culture for the last fifty years at least really pisses me off.

Readers of the Federalist Papers will recall passages where Madison steps back and says, "Look, we can't fashion a remedy for every contingency; at some point you have to trust the people to have good sense."

That's what's missing here. The Constitution can't save a corrupt people from themselves.

Hard, fast rule from a veteran police reporter: Excepting anyone engaged in infiltrating a criminal conspiracy in an undercover capacity, any law officer who hides his identity from the public is a shitheel is doing vile shit and is, in fact, actively destroying the credibility of law enforcement.
This really hasn’t gotten enough attention this week.

Brazil didn’t stop at sentencing former president Bolsanaro to 27 years for an attempted coup; his entire inner circle—from the vice president and the military commander to the intelligence chief and even his son—are also facing decades in prison.

America, this is what democracy looks like.
