1,000%. Closely related; engineering founders who think they need to do more engineering, when what they actually need to do is learn distribution.

Building better mousetrap is not a business strategy
Dumb thing engineering founders say:

“Everything is an engineering problem.”

No, everything is 𝘯𝘰𝘵 an engineering problem, and you know almost nothing about any of it.

When you understand that, you can begin to actually become competent at those things.

This is what confuses me. Like Jeff, my dude, go buy a sports team or 3. Plant a billion trees. Buy a million solar panels and give them away. Have all of Super Mario World reconstructed in your back yard and race little go karts. Why do this?
If I had even a fraction of Bezos's money I would fund so much unprofitable shit and let it absolutely rip.

Just to add my data; Been writing Coral for 3 years. We have 4k subscribers, great engagement, great list. If we did every type of monetization under the sun (ads, more gated content), it would likely still not pay my rent.

It's a labor of love & lead magnet for other stuff so we don't, but still.
i know that this is an unpopular take, but everyone starting their own newsletter as a revenue stream is not a sustainable model for writing and reporting or for people who love and want to pay for media.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

Incredible
Quilicura, Chile, one of the communities I wrote about in EMPIRE OF AI, has launched a brilliant initiative to inspire more responsible AI prompting. Today, don't use AI; ask the townspeople instead: quili.ai. So heartened to see this creative act of resistance.

Noon Energy is a rechargeable module that uses "the same elements nature has used to store energy for billions of years" for long-duration energy storage by splitting CO2 into solid carbon and O2 that is released. When power is needed, O2 from the air recombines to make CO2 and release energy.

Replies are fascinating. My thoroughly lukewarm take, after two years working with / investing in frontier AI, is that nothing Almodei says here is particularly unreasonable.

Not guaranteed and of course he is hugely biased. But it's all a pretty realistic extrapolation of where the tech is headed.
This is quite a read. I know, obviously, there's a whole lot of boosterism, talking-one's-book involved, but I also think it's a mistake for the humanist/liberal/left to ignore the possibility that the AI maximalists are actually right about where this is going
