Cantina Sounds: Star Wars source music
@cantinasounds.bsky.social
Exploring diegetic music — music the characters hear and make — from a galaxy far far away, in movies, TV shows, video games, and theme parks. I'm @jere7my.bsky.social. Spreadsheet of 500+ Star Wars diegetic tracks: bit.ly/cantinasounds
The music from this episode, "Out of Darkness", is credited to Kevin Kiner, though David G. Russell and Matthew St. Laurent also worked on the episode. The cue is not named on the cue sheet.

R3X plays it in Oga's Cantina and over the air on BSO 401.72 in Galaxy's Edge. On a good night you might get the bartenders leading the crowd in a singalong. "Una Duey Dee" is our selection for day 209 of #TheDiegeticShuffle. Hic! youtu.be/mgqHR74CpME?...

It's not clear how much of what we hear is diegetic—some of the singing is, but the full chorus ("a blend of international vocalists and languages") and percussion are ambiguous. It was the first cue Abels wrote for the show, as it was performed on camera. www.motionpictures.org/2024/06/the-...

It was composed by Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Abels (michaelabels.com), who also composed the scores for "Us", "Nope", and "Get Out", and Pablo Croissier (www.pablocroissier.com/en/home), a composer from the Canary Islands who worked with Abels on "Us". youtu.be/EPzBL9CMW2Q?...

Old news presumably, but I just noticed Dok-Ondar was apparently at this party?

The "stormtrooper", as his ID code hints, is actually Solo composer John Powell (JP, age 54), who sings the male vocals (the other sounds like Baraka May). This song got an official release on the deluxe soundtrack, and it's day 206 of #TheDiegeticShuffle. youtu.be/zP0BeVwP3LE?...

Chukha-Trok was voiced by Michael Pritchard, a comedian and voice actor who appeared on Taxi and Sesame Street and in the Captain EO show. I'm guessing this song was mostly his improvisation. Pritchard has since worked for decades as a motivational speaker for kids.

Prado kindly included "Jabba's Birthday Party" on his demo reel, so you can listen to the whole thing (and download the mp3, if you can navigate the code) on his website: www.rpradomusic.com?wix-music-tr... Click the link and scroll down.

This track cheats a little; it starts as clearly diegetic when Boba is outside, then keeps playing continuously even as the scene skips forward in time. I'd call it "scourse" (both score and source). It was released on the Book of Boba Fett soundtrack: youtu.be/kHY07ClkJTs?...

(This isn't quite true—we also have "Game Source" and "Aunt Z Source", but details are scant.)

That's one of the things I love about diegetic music—how often are composers asked to compose intentionally bad music?

(This scene also demonstrates that even Star Wars was not immune to the 80s blight of "cool" animated characters who yell "Party!")
