Funnily enough, the little lore rework I did to Beetle has actually inspired me to go back and change some of Bugdeon's older mechanics and lore. Ain't that crazy??

For now here's a fun little lore teaser of sorts I'm working on

And yes, it will have some in-game functionality too ^v^

I am also aware I haven't really touched much on the player character lore, but that's mostly since a lot of it is sorta unfinished to a degree

I doubt this'll really work out but I wanna ask anyways purely just for any kind of feedback

I wanna add a bit to Beetle's character. Literally since their conception they've been written as "generically standard guy in leader role" and I've been thinking of giving them a bit more depth

The decision to make their design canonically not their real one was inspired by how depictions of angels tended to vary a lot

Wow today's art sure got weird didn't it??

Anywho, this is another one 'a the game's Chance Time event NPCs named Birdwing! (Which also means they're not that major)

Design-wise, they're partially inspired by biblically accurate angels, alongside the similarly named group of Birdwing butterflies

As for lore, there ain't much else I can really say at the moment besides "The tyrant was abandoned by their people and is REALLY mad". So there's that

Another fun fact about this design: their weapon has a microwave stirrer attached to it since their microwave was broken in their "quest" chain

Something that's been kinda on my mind when it comes to coming up with coin drops, max Mana, or other numerical values for Bugdeon is really the SCALE of it all. I'm not a game dev in the slightest so I don't know how to describe it, but here's a crudely drawn image to hopefully convey my point

Fun fact about today's art: It's literally the largest character drawing I've done for this project currently

By MS Paint scales, they're roughly 499 x 577px Death's-Head Hawkmoth is ~ 562 x 327px and Wasp is ~ 424 x 405px

Technically speaking, a small amount of inspiration for the concept of alternate routes / bosses was from Spamton and, more specifically, the requirements for fighting Spamton NEO. With Spamton being technically a forced boss if you were to do Snowgrave, but optional otherwise

Welp, today's officially the day!

Exactly 1 year ago as of me typing this, the first bit of art and concept material was provided for Bugdeon in the form of Beetle as the very first player character!

Bugdeon is now officially 1 year old!! Hurray(???)

When it came to the outfit creation process however, I ended up going with a hat that technically belonged to Yourself (Silly Billy if you need a more recognizable name), as it matched what I wanted from the hat. Thus, to make the clothes match, I sampled Yourself's color palette

A bit of a small fun fact thread about this outfit:

Spider was intended to be far more red instead of purple.

If you saw my custom Balatro cards I posted a bit ago, you may have noticed Spider uses a lot of red on their card (in part to being a reference to Boyfriend FNF)

Final thing I wanna bring up is some extra detail I put into the design

Third thing to bring up: Lore!

I did actually finalize the butterfly lore a decent bit truth be told. While yes, butterflies are still overtly contorted and misfigured, canonically this robotic fella was made before that had happened

Perhaps this snippet of a lore entry will help clear some air

First up: Origins!

Besides being a massive reference to Angela (More intended to be their Library of Ruina appearance, but also taking some influence from their Lobotomy Corporation appearance also), they're (albeit broadly) based off the Alesa genus of Riodinidae (AKA Metalmark Butterflies)
