We all have that moment where we have a blast playing the game everyone else already played 20 or 30 years ago.

For me, tonight, that's DOOM. I'm the last human being to play DOOM.

I just shoved 50 rockets up the cyberdemon's hey-hey, and now it's time for bed.

After all those years of development, mis-development, and re-development, it looks like they pretty much decided that Metroid Prime 4 should just be more of what Metroid Prime 3 was. And I didn't like that game much.

Oh well.

Still haven't had a chance to play Daggerheart, but that's not gonna stop me from dragging it a little for its take on languages:

So does every high-level DOOM challenge map just boil down to carving out a safe place to sit and wait while all the monsters kill each other?
December 4, 2025 at 9:06 PM
I'm playing DOOM seriously for the first time. (I know, I know. I'm a bad 90s kid.) So far my main conclusion is that secrets in this game are impossible to find.

If anyone needs me, I'll be scraping and grunting against every wall I see for the rest of my life, thanks.

Suikoden is one of the all-time great classic JRPGs. Hits right in that late SNES/early PS1 sweet spot. Anyway here's stream number three:

Fighter might be my favorite class in 5e. I played a champion fighter from L1 to L20 and he was awesome. His god forbade the use of bladed weapons, so he rocked a +1 staff with the Sentinel and Polearm Master feats. His name was Large Tom. Later I made a bugbear version of him as an NPC!

Part of the strength of 5e is that I can engage players who have read all the same rulebooks I have, and I can engage players who don't care to learn and are only going to play once. Anyone can roll a d20 and have someone show them what to add.

The one book I really, really wanted for 5e, but never got, was an Arms & Equipment Guide. That was one of my favorite splats for 2e. It was filled with great descriptions and artwork of non-magical weapons and equipment, including the amazing Gnomish Workman's Leather.

My next D&D campaign is going to require more work to get out of the gate than any I've run so far. So I'm developing it alongside my current D&D campaign. That means I'm unreasonably excited for two campaigns simultaneously, and my weird little heart can't take it.

Making fun of ragebait articles means you are engaging with ragebait articles, which is what authors of ragebait articles want.

You don't win against ragebait by going to war with it, or by mocking it, or even by debunking it. You win by ignoring it and choosing to put joy into the world instead.

Tonight we stole an opera and a pair of prize racing dogs.

I cannot stress this enough.

We did NOT harm the dogs. I repeat: the dogs are PERFECTLY healthy and happy.

I want that on the record.

Meanwhile my experience with Hollow Knight and Tunic was hitting a boss I couldn't beat, backtracking to find more stuff, still being unable to beat the boss, looking up a guide to find out there *wasn't* anything left to find that would help, then quitting the games I paid money for.
Getting stuck causes players to explore the world.

Dying causes players to think about what they're doing.

An "impossible" situation causes players to learn how the game works and eventually achieve the impossible.

We need to be able to design *some* games around these fundamental ideas.

When I encounter a "hate on D&D" thread, I like to click through some of the user profiles to see what ttrpgs they are excited about.

Often, I don't find anything. Whatever game they're playing that fuels their hatred of D&D, they aren't sharing it or talking about it.

Weird?

Tfw you get a whole cherry pie all to yourself.

UNRELATED QUESTION:

What happens if you eat an entire cherry pie, do you have to go to a hospital? Asking for a friend.

BONUS OBSERVATION:

Having a smile on your face ten miles wide sounds like it would be very painful. Hospital for sure.

"People should try more indie ttrpgs!"

I love this sentiment. I really do. I agree people should be adventurous with their hobbies, to step outside of their comfort zone sometimes and open themselves up to new experiences. But how reasonable is it, really?

I do believe the D&D adventure I'm currently planning is the meanest thing I've ever done as a DM. It's well beyond the pale. We're in torch-and-pitchfork territory here.

My players are going to love it.

I stole the Dying condition from Beyond the Woods, a 5e survival hexcrawl game due out in print next year. It lets 0hp characters stay in the fight, but forces a death save immediately, narrowing the window they can be healed. Still haven't killed anyone with it, but I've made my players sweat.

For the record, I do like tinkering with rules. It's one of the really fun parts of D&D for me. In our current campaign I developed rules for a Pokémon Stadium style battlefield, a timetable for a complex drama club production (including a tiger!), and [spoilers for the next adventure].
