This is exactly right. 2021, faced with a purported $100 million deficit entirely the creation of bonkers admin vision and solution was going to be closing departments and firing faculty. Miraculously faculty won the fight and all cuts rescinded. But their certainty they were right was astounding
The part in my book where French officers decided their programs worked despite all evidence to the contrary and it was actually just their subordinates' fault if thing didn't turn out right really only started to make sense to me when I began working more closely with the university administration

Awful - there is hardly an administrator in the US who should be allowed to retain their job
The New School is now a place where students cannot major in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Global Policy & International Affairs, Global Studies, Urban Studies, or Environmental Studies. And more pauses, closures, and mergers coming down the pike this week. The future is uncertain.

Today there was an attempted ICE raid in Bensonhurst & community members showed up. Even though NYPD collaborated with ICE by trying to disburse the crowd; community members stood their ground & ICE left without kidnapping a single person per the rapid response groups I'm on. We protect us!

The student as the petty sovereign—this is what initiated this iteration of intensification around content control wrt race and gender at Texas A&M and what happened at IU. This is the new flow of institutional authority.

The Epstein files reveal/exposure seem to function like a fetish in the Freudian sense, which is to say they avow and disavow and the big reveal will be a let down because we already know

I don't think it's quite right to see Cornell, UVa etc etc in terms of capitulation to the Trump regime. Rather, they are consolidating the university they have been creating for decades, one in which faculty and students are just unfortunate necessary components to the machine

Great essay from Pete Coviello on inane Mamdani-Bowdoin-Africana Studies story in the Times and the disingenuous discourses that engulf us.

"An “alienated view of the world”! Not by, like, trying to pay rent or having an insurance claim denied—no, no, it was probably the Foucault you read in 2003."
Maybe Don’t Talk to the New York Times About Zohran Mamdani
It’s remarkable, the people you’ll hear from. Teach for even a little while at an expensive institution—the term they tend to prefer is “elite”—and odds are that eventually someone who was a studen…

At a time when a journal committed to history as a form of critique is more necessary than ever, History of the Present encourages critical examination of both history’s influence on politics and the politics of history as a discipline. Issue 15:2 is now available: buff.ly/zGvYNDW
