On this date in 1895, Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony was premiered by the Philharmonic. Unlike many Mahler premieres, this one was highly-successful. His disciple Bruno Walter would later maintain that "this concert marked the beginning of Mahler's public career as a composer."

#NowSpinning Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta in a gigantic, imposing performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Rafael Kubelik. I know the critics didn’t like his Chicago work, but boy do I like this performance!
