Today in 1959, “On the Beach” opened in movie theaters around the world.

“The war started when people accepted the idiotic principle that peace could be maintained by arranging to defend themselves with weapons they couldn't possibly use without committing suicide.”

@tomgauld.bsky.social Found a @newscientist.com cover you did way back in 2004 while cleaning up my study. You’ve been at this a long time!

Some of Georges Simenon's best novels are his romans Américains, a baker's dozen surgical dissections of the American way of life in the 1950s -- most of them out of print, two of them never translated into English.

REAR WINDOW was released 71 years ago today. One of the most enduring Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, and among the most popular films of James Stewart and Grace Kelly, the story of how it was made might give you the feeling you’re being watched…

I never cared about horse racing until I started reading Dick Francis and Kaoru Takamura but now I’m a fan. I had us take a break from team training to watch the Kentucky Derby. 📚🐎🏇🌹

www.gq.com/story/bad-mo... I used to read everything by Carl Hiaasen but lost track of him the past few years. I didn’t read Bad Monkey but the adaptation is my favorite show on TV
Bad Monkey's Carl Hiaasen is the Mark Twain of Florida Men
An AppleTV+ adaptation finally captures the bestselling author's unique comic vision—and the anger behind it. “The best satire I’ve read has come from anger,” he says. “Satire is a weapon.”

Found a few @backlisted.bsky.social books on the shelf at the mall when I took my dog to get my dog’s picture taken with Santa. Here’s his copy of The Town House by Norah Lofts.

Finally got access to Talking Pictures TV. I can’t watch everything but limited access is better than nothing. Used to get so jealous of posters at the other place talking about watching this channel.

Apparently the original kid faked his demonic possession and I for one feel a lot better knowing this.
‘The Exorcist’ is 50 years old, and its origin story is still haunting
When the classic movie first screened in 1973, it horrified audiences. It was inspired by a 1949 exorcism in Mt. Rainier that The Washington Post wrote about at the time.

My first ever post on Bluesky…
Publication day for my translation of Hideo Yokohama’s The North Light.
I loved translating this look at Japanese architecture and history, with of course Yokohama’s signature touches of politics and mystery. Where is the family? And why is the house still empty…?

You know how journalists always ask writers to list who they would invite to a dinner party if they could invite anyone? I feel like @backlisted.bsky.social is my answer, especially if I happen to be eating while listening.

I found a handful of Storybook ND hardcovers in the children’s section of a used bookstore. I opted for Osamu Dazai as he is new to me and is also apparently having a moment.

Well that was quite an ending. Also, these Storybook ND hardcover are beautiful and a joy to hold.
