Below is our story about the skyrocketing number of kids detained by ICE.

We cover the facility where Liam is now being held-- parents said food had worms and mold, and kids were so distressed they hit themselves in the face and wet themselves.

ICE Threw Thousands of Kids in Detention, Many For Longer Than Court-Prescribed Limit
Former immigration staffers argue ICE is choosing to detain families for prolonged periods to speed deportations and compel them to leave.

I have many thoughts related to Vance's press thing.

1. So, we like ALJs having authority? Does that mean we're going to stop calling the NLRB unconstitutional? That we now like Social Security ALJs? No? Gee, I wonder what the difference is. (1/n)

Okay.
Liam Ramos is five.
Taken from his father after school.
His family didn’t know where he was for 24 hours.
He’s NOW in a federal detention facility in Texas.
At least one other student is there too.
Two other elementary school students were taken and the school doesn’t know where they are.
Here’s the report from KARE. The boy is five-year-old Liam Ramos.

I'm sorry, abolishing ICE is now off the table as the centrist compromise.

The floor is now The Hague.
Minnesota: "School officials say the [5-year-old] child was used as bait. They say [ICE] agents made little Liam knock on the door to ask to be let in in order to see if anyone else was home."

Earlier today in Minneapolis, journalist Amanda Moore (@noturtlesoup17.bsky.social) documented a tense, chaotic federal operation near 34th Street and Park Avenue.

From personal experience, I'm pretty sure this is an undercount of the cuts. And it truly does not adequately capture that this is on top of the decade long hit that federal agencies have been enduring since sequestration.

What is especially galling is that when I go back to work, which is going to be a fucking shitshow to dig out of the damage, I won't even get the cold comfort of it being worth something.

I am so unbelievably lividly, incandescently depressed and passed right now.

I have been locked out of work for over 30 days. That's 30 days where the work I do protecting people's rights (as flawed as it sometimes goes) is not being done. That's 30 days where the work my friends do helping people is not being done.

I still think the dems need to hold the line. (1/n)

Even more important to not give in on the budget and shut it down.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court allows the Trump administration to withhold $4 billion in foreign aid funds b/c of Trump’s “pocket rescission” argument and b/c enforcing the injunction would affect foreign affairs. The Democratic appointees dissent. More to come at Law Dork: www.lawdork.com

The wired article on DOGE is alarming but not surprising. And the rumor that Vought is going to release a memo that seeks to RIF federal workers if a shutdown occurs is also alarming but not surprising.

Even with that threat, Dems need to shut it down. Don't give in to this inhumane budget!

Expect the Court to formally, actually overrule Humphrey's on paper some time next year

In practice though, the Supreme Court keeps saying people should proceed as if any law that conflicts with what Trump wants has already been struck down

#BREAKING: Over dissents from Justices Sotomayor, Kagan & Jackson, #SCOTUS grants a stay in the Slaughter case (allowing President Trump to remove the last Dem member of the FTC), *and* grants certiorari "before judgment" to decide whether to formally overrule its 1935 ruling in Humphrey's Executor.

We still need to keep the pressure on state agencies to actually exercise their oversight authority.
ICYMI: a federal court ruled against private corporation Geo Group, who barred WA L&I and Dept of Health from inspecting their NW ICE detention prison in Tacoma.

While Geo will likely appeal, this is a positive step towards oversight of the long allegation record of human rights abuses here.

The private company that runs the Northwest ICE Processing Center also dropped its lawsuit against Cascade PBS after the state provided redacted photos.

To put this into context, the judicial warrant for the search at the Hyundai plant named just four people.

Relying on that warrant, ICE detained nearly 500 people. DHS admitted that included U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and people lawfully here on visas.

I am mostly speechless. Having volunteered to help ORR in the past and worked with this population of children, I cannot even imagine how traumatizing this whole debacle was for them on top of the trauma they have already endured entering the US initially.
Judge Sooknanan: As I said at the start of this hearing, I got a call at 2:36 am [last night] because the government chose the wee hours of the morning on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend to execute a plan to move these children. That's why we're here.

My heart aches. 💔

Guns should be regulated and, frankly, mostly banned. Until they are, children will continue to die in events like this, and countless acts of violence that would be diminished without guns will continue to decimate our communities and families.
The Minneapolis shooter fired dozens of rounds through a window at Annunciation Catholic School today.

Metal detectors wouldn’t have stopped him. “School safety” theater will never stop a man with an assault rifle and a country flooded with guns.
