NIH FY26 might be worse than FY25.

We have a CR and the NIH still citing the presidents budget request, an unofficial multi year funding mandate, apparently no paylines, IC leadership turnover, continued OMB/Vought interference, more shutdowns likely

This is a recipe for total paralysis.

I was asked about this today, but I think it also matters to take into account the recent change to streamlining, discussing only the top 25-30% of applications. That means scientific review makes the first cut.
Short thread of observation/opinion.

I’ve often called this song—“Just Like Heaven”—the finest single of the 80s and meant it. This cover’s arrangement only confirms it for me 💜🔥

Stopping to cue up each song, recording snippets of shows, crafting track lists around themes like “happy birthday” or “i hope you’re miserable without me”. They took time!

This week in NIH fun:
1. Fill the many IC vacancies with political appointees.
2. New awards approved by the IC directors and/or council based on factors other than peer reveiw
3. Unilateral termination of grants with no legal recourse

Thinking a lot lately about the simple fact that college allows people to spend about 15 weeks immersed in a disciplinary conversation with an expert in that field. And what a special thing that is.

Here's the press release ICE issued the day after Chaofeng Ge died. Although, he was found with hogtied with “a cloth ligature around his neck,” ICE chose this headline:

ICE detainee passes away at Pennsylvania's

"Passes away."

Update: the university is now allegedly offering compensation to faculty who move their exams because of a football game we're not even guaranteed to play in yet.
Because the Big XII championship game is during final exams, our Provost suggests faculty choose from ideas including "exempt students from the exam" and "change your whole method of assessment" with 1 week notice

More than usual I'm feeling I work for a football team with a school on the side.

Yes, which is exactly the goal - to make US a terrible place to do science.
The administration is building a legal pathway for ad hoc grant terminations:

"if the agency determines that the award no longer effectuates the program goals or agency priorities"

Converting multiyear grants to 'at whim' coin flips will undermine the stability & leadership of American science.
Update on a significant development NIH grant terms.

On 10/1, a change to grant making regs went into effect that gives NIH more power to terminate grants for policy reasons.

But to use this power, new grant terms must include specific language. See @aniloza.bsky.social w/ the story from July.
