In other words, I get really leery when “realism” goes from an expression type to some sort of rope around the neck and criteria for judgement in an absolute way when it comes to art.

Another thing LRP tangentially reminded me of: how ppl will say visually-driven social media pages are “fake” or “superficial” or “curated” as a pejorative if there’s any focus tied to themes or aesthetics. As if “realism” is only expressed through sloppiness, chaos or resentment for visual skills.

The problem is people confuse the pleasure of consumption—that pleasantness—with the arduous, underpaid, exploitative, highly volatile nature of production.

Ppl liking seeing, hearing, touching, feeling, experiencing art…doesn’t mean regular working artists spend everyday happy, well-fed and safe.
