It was the last show I saw pre-pandemic: he played the NYC House of Blues in 2019. He was very frail, had to be helped to the stage, and was no longer standing up while playing. But he still put on a credible show and like: there was exactly one living Sun Records alumnus and it was him. So I went.

Anyway the moral of this not hugely interesting story is: always go see the concert you got a free ticket for, professional musicians are kinda amazing. Still not an Extreme fan but definitely a grudging Extreme Respecter.

And like… “More Than Words” is a dippy song. But… they kinda burned the house down. Unbelievably tight, and Gary Cherone was perfectly happy to spend the entire show running at top speed (while singing in key) around a multilevel stage and climbing speaker stacks if necessary to keep the energy up.

But I was broke and it was free. So I went to the Orpheum, stood up in front of a crowd of Extreme fans and asked if anyone wanted a free spare ticket. Some young lady claimed it, and then I went in to see the show figuring I could leave early if they sucked, which they probably would.

Okay so the last one: I was unbelievably bored at a temp job and dialed in to a radio station call-in promotion. Like the dog that caught the car: I won and now it was my problem. Exactly zero of my friends wanted to see Extreme. I didn’t really want to see them myself?

At the risk of being extremely Old: what on earth game is this?

My partner has a sort of weird aphasic block about kitchen knives: no matter what the task is, they will reach for the smallest knife currently on the rack. I have seen them attempt to cut a rib roast with a paring knife. I bring this up for no reason whatsoever.

It’s definitely not at all creepy that they still haven’t found the missing heads.

La la la it’s fine, there’s no reason at all to think that stable societies just regularly dissolve into orgies of intracommunal violence and that this has been an inexorable feature of the mass psychology of our species since BEFORE THE INVENTION OF WRITTEN LANGUAGE, I will sleep A-OK tonight.

100% worth the massive pain in the ass of straining a pound of cooked cranberries, although I think next time I might just break out the kitchen aid food mill attachment.

Lightly seething with jealousy. 🤣

NMA mentioned! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Incredibly aggravating that they’re unlikely to tour the US ever again. :(

Good news: we could solve a large part of that problem by offering fast-path visas and reciprocal licensing to foreign doctors.

Bad news: we are extremely normal about immigration and the AMA/ACoP will send a hit team after you if you even _think_ about licensing reciprocity.

Now _this_ is a nuclear take. Might even be right! (But I’m gonna continue to be hard in favor of both.)

Is the sprinkling on top candied sour orange peel or…?
November 28, 2025 at 12:17 AM
Oh hell yes. Might fuck around and do this over the weekend.

(One advantage of living in a mostly Dominican and Puerto Rican neighborhood is that sour oranges are sold in bulk at my local supermarket and I always feel like I should be doing more with that fact.)
