Almost nobody of note actually makes it to free agency anymore, and then you're competing with at least a dozen other teams.

It's very hard to see a viable blueprint for this front office.

I mean I get the aversion to another long rebuild, but what's a realistic path to making the current roster a legit Cup threat? The have no significant draft capital, not much cap space, few prospects of note, and an upcoming UFA market that once again looks extremely thin.

Leafs will finish 17th, win the lottery, move up 10 spots to 6, and hand that pick to the Bruins.
November 13, 2025 at 1:21 AM
They're too good to finish bottom 5, but nowhere near being a real threat to win anything meaningful. They got incredibly lucky last year winning the division with terrific goaltending.

This is the Maurice-era Leafs all over again. They're just treading water.

So their next 1st round pick is the week before Matthews is slated to become a UFA.
November 13, 2025 at 1:16 AM
It's the same with Knies. They'll walk him to UFA by the time they're even potentially ready to compete again. A 23 year old with his skill set, signed long-term term, is rarely available. The return there should be significant.
November 13, 2025 at 1:14 AM
With Matthews, they're better off trading him sooner vs later. He's worth more to any potential suitors with 2 years left on his deal than 1 year (and 1 year younger).

They need to maximize returns.
November 13, 2025 at 1:12 AM
They should certainly be open to trading Tavares, if he's willing/interested in chasing a cup. He won't be around when the next cycle of relevance begins
November 13, 2025 at 1:10 AM
No 1st round picks for 3 years. The longer you wait on trading Matthews, the further out you push the inevitable rebuild. Ditto for Nylander. Both have to go. No chance you can retool without picks to either trade for impact players or at the draft.
November 13, 2025 at 12:45 AM
No other path forward. Can't rely on free agency to add impact players. No draft capital to use in trades or to find impact players via the draft.

The alternative at this point is to tread water as a wildcard bubble team until Matthews' deal runs out in 2028 and walks for nothing.
November 12, 2025 at 10:40 PM
Will they? No. Should they? Of course.
November 12, 2025 at 9:53 PM
They absolutely should move him when considering the return he'd likely net. There's probably a bigger market for him than Matthews or Nylander considering his age, contract, and role.
November 12, 2025 at 9:47 PM
Ride out contracts you can't move. Don't eat any salary on multi-year contracts just to get rid of them, because you won't need the cap space (Domi).

Plan to suck for a long time. For the love of god, don't try to take any shortcuts for once.
November 12, 2025 at 9:44 PM
Move out players who have appeal as depth pieces on playoff rosters (McMann, Maccelli, Joshua, Roy, Laughton, Carlo, OEL, McCabe, Tanev, Tavares).

Build the groundwork for bigger deals involving Matthews, Nylander, and Mo now, with a ideal window around the draft/free agency.

First steps are to relieve Tre and Berube of their responsibilities. I want to give Tre some leeway, but those deadline deals last year are indefensible.

Bring in an experienced GM as a stopgap to deconstruct the roster. Start with a guy you can move who has significant value (Knies).

We call them Stink for a reason

I guess I'm just putting this out into the ether to get it off my chest.

It must take incredible courage to make that decision. I can't imagine knowing "this is the last day I will ever exist, this is the last day I will see my family." I think it's easier to not know.

Is this person white? I wonder if this is some sort of code for "I only want to date white guys"

Do it. You can fix her.
