Robert Young is fantastic as the shittiest of shitheels, a triple-timing son of a bitch whose dick gets him into more trouble than any man should know. You'll hate him and yet...you'll want to see how it all plays out in this perfect balance of melodrama and thriller that has a great framing device and an ending that I did not expect. Also, Jane Greer in this. Yowza.

Our representative in Congress signed the moronic resolution "decrying the horrors of Socialism."

I'm about to call his office; here's what I'm going to say.
In 1952, Harry Truman was stumping for Adlai Stevenson in Batavia, New York. At his stop there, he made a speech that took direct aim at the conservatives that were attacking the social policies that FDR had implmented. These were policies that not over helped pull American out of the Great Depression, but they'd helped kickstart the post-war boom that so many people think of as a Golden Era for this country. At the end of it, he summed up his argument with a very simple phrase: "Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people." That's why I'm embarrassed and appalled that my representative in congress signed a resolution "Decrying the horrors of Socialism." Socialism and socialist policies brought us such horrors as: - The US Postal Service - The National Weather Service - Fire Departments - Public Libraries - Public education - Social security - Medicare and Medicaid - SNAP and WIC - Regulatory protections on food, drugs, workplaces, and much more. Many of these are things that Representative Vasquez has recently gone to the mat for. I get his weekly newsletter. I've read his rhetoric. This resolution Denouncing the "Horrors of Socialism" is nothing more than an attempt to reach a mushy middle that doesn't exist. Instead of decrying the political philosophy that brought about many of America's greatest improvements to our way of life, he should embrace it, educate the people who have benefited from it on both sides of the aisle, and serve in the interest of the people, not the ballot box.

"You can always find reasons. Even the Nazis had reasons." Frank Enley (Van Helfin) is leading a good life after World War II: he got the girl, he got the house, he got the kid, and he's even got the love the community of Santa Lisa, where he's built a comfortable world for himself. Joe Parkson (Robert Ryan) shows up to shatter all that, and the next 82 minutes are among the best that film noir has to offer. The first movie to really talk about the effects that the war had on men, Act of Violence is puts the audience through the ringer, following a man bent on a revenge against a man who, it turns out, may well have it coming despite being hailed as a hero. In many ways, this feels like a test run for Fred Zinneman's later, Academy Award winning High Noon: the tension racks up constantly as the two leads come closer and closer to their eventual collision while the storytelling density and ability to imbue every character with a fully-realized life pulls the viewer in further and further. The supporting cast of women who find themselves caught up in the two men's struggle all do their jobs well, but Mary Astor's performance as a prostitute who tries to help Frank and ends up complicating things further is worth pointing out; the final scene she shares with Helfin is understated yet heartbreaking. (Special note: Robert Surtees shot this and for a man who's best known for he was also responsible for his works on comedies, musicals and war pictures and movies like Ben-Hur, The Graduate, The Sting and The Last Picture Show after, it's incredible just how well he took to the genre. A shame we didn't see more genre work from him besides this and 1951's art theft thriller The Light Touch.)
