All three hosts agreed Jamie Dornan stepped up BIG in this film, Dakota Johnson brought Ana to life in a way the book didn’t & the character development (especially Ana’s) worked so much better on screen. And yes—we talk about why this story absolutely did not need to be 500+ pages. 🙈

BOOK THOUGHTS Fifty Shades Darker As a group, we walked away from Fifty Shades Darker feeling overwhelmed, underwhelmed, and a little confused about how the same book managed to do both. All three of us agree on one big thing: there is a lot happening in this book. Lindsey especially felt like she was juggling five subplots at once. With so many threads pulling for attention, it was hard to settle into any single storyline long enough to stay invested. She's convinced she would've rated it higher if the book had simply focused more and tried to do a little less. EL James Crystal, who found the first book so bad it was good, didn't get that same fun energy this time. For her, this book wasn't delightfully messy, it was just messy. Keri had a very different experience-at least the first time around. When she originally read this series, it was her introduction to erotica and she loved it. But rereading it now, after years of reading a wide range of spicy romances, this book did not hold up. She felt the relationship development between Ana and Christian was weak, and that all the added subplots existed mostly because their dynamic wasn't interesting enough on its own. She hoped this reread would rekindle her old love for the series, but instead it left her disappointed. And across the board, we all agreed: There are too many spicy scenes, and most of them don't serve the story. They re frequent, repetitive, and rarely move the plot forward, which only adds to the overcrowded feeling of the book. @BASERONABOOKPODCAST MOVIE THOUGHTS All three of us agree that Jamie Dornan is significantly stronger in this second film. His performance feels more confident, more grounded, and honestly, more human. Movie-Christian finally has a personality beyond brooding stares and one-word answers, which is a major step up from his book counterpart, who often feels flat and one-track-minded. Dakota Johnson also shines here. She gives Ana a sense of realism, emotional logic, and growth that the book doesn't quite pull off. Movie-Ana gets an actual are, and Dakota's performance makes her feel like a real person rather than a blank slate reacting to Christian's demands. That said, the movie swings a little too far in the other direction with Christian. Compared to the slow, uneven development in the book, the film's version feels almost over-corrected-he evolves rapidly, sometimes unrealistically fast. But honestly? We'll take an overly developed Christian over the underwritten, personality-deficient version we get in the novel. We all agreed the movie does streamline the story in ways that work. But it does cut some major conversations, especially around contraception and mental health-important topics that deserved screen time. Still, the film's focus and pacing make it far more enjoyable than the overlong, 500+ page book that often feels padded with unnecessary scenes. @BASEDONABOOKPODCAST BOOK VS MOVIE Fifty Shades Darker EVERY FAIRY TALE HAS A DARK SIDE EL James FIFTYSHADES DARKER Both the Fifty Shades Darker book and movie follow Ana and Christian as they reunite, confront figures from Christian's past, and begin navigating a deeper, more emotional relationship. But the two versions take very different routes in how they deliver the drama, tension, and backstory. The book leans heavily into And's work life, her dynamic with Jack Hyde, and the growing threats surrounding Christian's past. It also gives more insight into Ana's inner thoughts and Christian's controlling behaviors, making the relationship complications feel more layered. Several characters have expanded roles with more detailed backstories and motivations. There's also more emphasis on Christian's financial The movie streamlines the plot, shifting the spotlight toward Ana and Christian's emotional reconnection and Christian's trauma. Some character arcs and reveals are simplified or altered. The film incorporates more of Christian's childhood background earlier and uses visual storytelling to show his vulnerability rather than lingering on relationship negotiations or workplace drama. Several book subplots and details are trimmed or combined to keep the pacing fast and cinematic. The book is heavier on relationship complications, emotional introspection, and external conflict, while the movie focuses more on romance, redemption, and visual tension. Both tell the same love story-but each version chooses a different path to get there. @BASEDONABOOKPODCAST FINAL VERDICT In the end, we unanimously prefer the movie over the book. Better performances, clearer character arcs, stronger pacing, and fewer pointless subplots make this adaptation the more compelling version of the story. Book thoughts All three of us went into The Subtle Knife already familiar with the world of His Dark Materials, and while that helped us connect with the story more this time around, we still had mixed experiences overall. Keri and Lindsey both found the pacing to be a major struggle. While Keri felt more invested in the story and characters than she did with The Golden Compass, this second installment still dragged for her-with so much happening across multiple worlds, it often felt overwhelming rather than exciting. Lindsey agreed, saying the first half was tough to get through, though things picked up toward the end when the story's momentum and stakes finally came together. Crystal, who had read the book before and also listened to the audiobook this time (as did all of us), really enjoyed revisiting the story. She agreed that the plot can feel dense and a bit disjointed at times, but she loved the world-hopping, magic, witches, and science-meets-fantasy elements that make this series so unique. Because she already knew most of the characters and how Pullman's world works, she found it easier to follow and appreciated how the new concepts were woven into the existing lore. We all agree the audiobook is phenomenal-beautifully narrated and immersive-but the book Subtle Knite adds intriguing layers to Pullman's universe and delivers plenty of rich, imaginative moments for readers who love complex fantasy worlds. @BASEDONABOOKPODCAST SERIES THOUGHTS All three of us agree-His Dark Materials absolutely shines on screen. Season 2 is a stunning continuation of the story, and we're unanimous in saying the show is phenomenal. The acting is outstanding across the board. Every performance feels authentic and deeply emotional, bringing Philip Pullman's complex world and characters to life in a way that's both grounded and magical. The chemistry between the cast, especially Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson, captures the heart of Lyra and Will's journey perfectly. We also can't say enough about the daemons. The shows visual effects and creative choices make them teel truly alive and meaningtul, perfectly representing that spiritual and emotional bond from the books. They're more than just companions-they re extensions of the characters themselves, and the series absolutely nails that connection. @BASEDONABOOKPODCAST BOOK VS SERIES PHILIP PULLMAN HIS DARK MATERIALS THE SUBTLE KNIFE Both The Subtle Knife and Season 2 of His Dark Materials open new doors-literally-as Lyra Silvertongue and Will Parry step beyond their worlds and into the mysterious city of Cittagazze. In the book, Pullman expands his universe through layered storytelling and deep philosophical themes. We see more of Will's inner struggles, Lyra's growing independence, and the moral gray areas of Dust, faith, and fate. The pacing feels deliberate and introspective, giving readers time to sit with the mystery behind the knife and the cost of knowledge itself. The series, on the other hand, sharpens the focus on emotion and world-building. Visually stunning and faster-paced, it balances Lyra and Will's developing bond with the rising political and spiritual tension across worlds. The adaptation simplifies some plot threads from the book but brings characters like Mrs. Coulter and Mary Malone vividly to life, adding layers of complexity and compassion through incredible performances and breathtaking visuals. Both versions explore the same questions at the heart of the story-about truth, loss, and what it means to come of age in a fractured world-but they take different paths to get there. The book dives deeper into philosophy and inner worlds, while the series pulls you in with atmosphere, emotion, and visual storytelling that makes the multiverse feel real. @BASEDONABOOKPODCAST FINAL VERDICT Overall, His Dark Materials does a brilliant job balancing world-building, character development, and emotion. It's visually breathtaking, emotionally powerful, and an incredible adaptation that does justice to Pullman's vision-and leaves us excited to keep exploring every world it opens. Coulter The series dives much deeper into Marisa Coulter's past than the books do at this stage. Season Two adds emotional layers and motivations that The Subtle Knife never explicitly details-giving viewers a clearer picture of who she is, how she became this version of herself, and why she navigates power the way she does. These added scenes make her an even more complex (and chilling) character. Will Parry In the books, Will doesn't have meaningful interactions with extended family, but the show introduces his grandparents as part of his backstory. Season Two uses them to explore Will's family dynamics and to raise the emotional stakes around his father. It's an addition to the TV series that expands Will's world in ways the book doesn't touch on. Pavy Bonds While the book includes important revelations about Will and his father, the show goes further by giving them a more intimate, emotional moment together. Season Two gives us a father-son interaction that adds weight to their storyline and heightens the emotional impact. Gyptians Season One includes a beautiful cultural detail not found in The Golden Compass: a Gyptian coming-of-age ritual. This ceremony adds depth to Gyptian traditions and gives viewers a richer understanding of their community. It's show-exclusive moment that expands worldbuilding beyond what's in the book.
