Trump:

"NATO has treated the United States very badly. We've never asked for anything. We've never got anything."

Tell that to the families of 850 soldiers from 19 non-US NATO countries who died fighting to defend the United States in Afghanistan - the only occasion Article 5 was ever triggered.

I think part of the reason everyone is so blown away by this Carney speech is it's so long since we heard an actual grown-up articulate serious thoughts about the world. Empty vessels have been making a lot of noise
Mark Carney's speech really is terrific: full text is here and very much worth your time.

This is the best speech, just from a pure rhetoric perspective - its sophistication and persuasiveness - that I've seen a politician deliver in a good long while. Really recommend watching or reading the whole thing.
A YouTube link for those looking for it. No words.

Loved his speech.
In a speech to the World Economic Forum, Mark Carney says middle powers such as Canada must accept that the rules-based international order is effectively dead, and great power rivalry with is here to stay. Key excerpt:

"If great powers abandon even the pretense of rules & values for the unhindered pursuit of their power & interest, the gains from transactionalism will become harder to replicate" -- Carney's speech at Davos is an extended criticism of the damage Trump is doing (though he's not mentioning his name)

Our PM is not messing around. He knows that it will put a huge target on our back but he also understands that we have to stand up against Trump. Canada and China were the only ones who did not sign a trade agreement for the tariffs imposed on so-called "Liberation Day".

Mark Carney said Canada would be prepared to defend itself—even against the USA—in response to Trump’s deranged threats to invade NATO allies.

In just 12 months, Trump has turned America’s closest friendship into an adversary.

The world’s *longest* undefended border is our border with Canada.
