To be fair to me she rang me yesterday to talk about the bins so I think she was a day out too.

It looks like it could be stupid fun but that’s as high as my expectations are.

It’s at least 40 minutes too long and that Malek guy does nothing for me. Lots of stupid TV movie of the week scenes and ridiculous plot points (at one stage it looks like Malek’s character is going to have a romance with Göring’s wife 🙄).
I’d still say it’s worth a watch (at home) though 😂

Just about ok.

Reading about the trouble he had working with Hackman and you’d never know it from watching the movie.

Anderson’s first film without screenwriting partner Wilson (this time he’s joined by Noah Baumbach) and the results are a much looser, more ramshackle type of film. A tighter edit would help but it’s still a lot of fun and as beautifully shot and composed as you’d expect. Good but not essential.

The Spanish 1080p blu is online and looks great. I’d obviously love to see a proper restoration but in the meantime I highly recommend acquiring that. I only watched it properly for the first time during lockdown and was blown away.

Nothing at all. I tweeted the BFI about it years ago and they replied “great idea” which I now understand to have meant “piss off”.

I didn’t and regret that now but the Swedish subtitles would have driven me mad. It’s a film that really deserves more love.

I barely remember it tbh but it was never anything that was special to me so I would have watched it with different eyes to you. Looking forward to seeing it again.

I’m curious to see how his later films play to me now. I’ve only seen most of them once.

I hated The Royal Tenenbaums when I first saw it on release but watching it now it’s hard to know what I was thinking. A film that reveals more with every viewing. Hackman is fantastic (as usual) and it’s funny and surprisingly moving. Another true original from Anderson. The 4K is gorgeous.
