I watch movies, read comics, buy crap I don’t need and go to the pub but I have weekends off and I am my own boss.
Saw a trailer last night for a new film called Primate about a family with a pet chimpanzee who gets bitten by a snake and goes on a murderous rampage. I love this time of year when the studios release all their big award hopefuls.

I can’t wait for that new Timmy Chalet May film where he plays a gifted table tennis player who invents an orange ball that’s easier to see said no one ever.

Went to the cinema last night. Allocated seating but there were no letters on the rows or numbers on the seats. It was like the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey - people huddling in fear at the weird numberless system that had suddenly appeared before them.

This is really cheap for a Criterion 4K so OBVIOUSLY I’m thinking about buying it. The only problem is I’m pretty sure I’d hate the film or, at the very least, dread the idea of watching it so much that I’d just leave it on my shelf. I’ve heard it’s a masterpiece and also heard it’s boring shite.

As a younger man my pet hate was people telling me jokes which always ended up with me faking a laugh and them asking “did you not think that was funny?” (I’m terrible at faking laughter). Today’s equivalent is someone handing me a phone and saying “watch this, it’s brilliant/fascinating”. Stop it.

It’s hard to make a terrible film from such fascinating material but the director is guilty of having a go a couple of times here. Way too long, some ridiculous subplots but Crowe is decent and the gripping subject matter just about saves it. Ok but extremely flawed.

2026 is fast approaching and we have the Ilsa She Wolf films on 4K but David Lean’s Ryan’s Daughter has never even had a blu-ray release (the Spanish Blu is a bootleg) - a film that would look spectacular in 4K.
A crying shame for a hugely underrated and important film from a great director.

Looks like Amazon has fucked me on my order of Barry Lyndon 4K and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest 4K. Ordered months ago and now completely out of stock. Wankers.

A few mildly amusing moments aside I was mostly bored by this grim, slightly depressing nonsense. The action scenes are so flat you'll appreciate even more the work and skill of someone like George Miller. It might play better if you're drunk but that's hardly a recommendation.

Diving into The Wes Anderson Archive tonight and starting with his first film - Bottle Rocket. Hope to watch his entire filmography over the next couple of weeks.

Anyone? Still driving me mad
A modern film. A woman is telling off a professor/teacher/academic type man who is shocked and protesting his innocence. She is saying something like "I think you do enjoy the sexual tension between you and your students and you play up on it".
Any ideas? Driving me mad.

Sony are conducting a survey for physical media fans (USA only 🙁) to see what films they’d like released on 4K. Safe to say we can expect a few of these next year.

Still bizarre to me that they need to put warnings on Tom and Jerry cartoons that they may not be suitable for children.

This got fantastic reviews but didn’t work at all for me. An overlong, unfunny mess with horrible characters doing unbelievable things. I’ve liked some of the director’s previous films quite a bit but this was a serious misfire for me. Everyone seems to love it so I’m surprised how much I didn’t.

Watching this and within a few minutes my “this doesn’t look like America, this looks like Dublin” sense was tingling and sure enough.

I wasn’t crazy about the original Sisu but the sequel looks even dumber so I might be tempted into the pictures to see it.

Slow, talky film with an oddly intrusive score (although some of it works) and angry, unpleasant characters. Saying that Roberts is very good and there's a chilling revelation made by her character late in the film that really worked for me. Not great but better than I was expecting.
Watching a half hour of this before I have to go out. From the opening titles to its scenes of academics discussing weighty issues it’s hard not to feel like I’m watching a serious Woody Allen film.
