⏪ Yet - just last year - UN Secretary General António Guterres called for a ban on fossil fuel advertising.

He pointed out that the fossil fuel industry have long been "aided and abetted by advertising and PR companies – Mad Men fuelling the madness." 5/6

Edelman even has a recent history of using climate negotiations to advance fossil fuel interests.

At COP28, ADNOC - UAE's national oil company and one of Edelman's fossil fuel clients - used the conference to boost oil sales by $100 billion. 4/6

But just how bad are Edelman?

Pretty bad.

Research from Clean Creatives this year documented the agency's ongoing financial relationships with petrostates, trade groups linked to deforestation in the Amazon, and fossil fuel majors. 🤨 3/6

PR agency Edelman is responsible for conjuring greenwashing narratives for the fossil fuel industry.

Despite this clear conflict of interest - COP30 hired the agency to run the conference's communications this year. 🤥 2/6

Edelman invented the fossil fuel narratives, and now it’s running communications for COP30. All the while, frontline communities are telling very different stories.

Last week we took over Southwark station's ad space, calling on Sadiq Khan to implement a fossil ad ban.

Help us keep up the pressure by using our letter template tool to write to the Mayor. 👇 7/7

“Adverts promoting pollution on London transport undermine the Mayor’s commitments on clean air and climate action. We’re delighted Sadiq Khan, has pledged to review Transport for London’s ad policy. Public transport should never promote pollution.”

And - just to help with the "practicalities" - Caroline Russell points out that existing UK regulations prohibit ads that "encourage behaviour that is grossly prejudicial to the protection of the environment." 5/7

But, as Caroline Russell highlights, other cities in Europe are already leading the way without national legislation.

Earlier this year, Gothenburg passed a fossil fuel ad ban that includes ICE cars, airlines, fossil fuel companies, and other fossil fuel products. 👏 4/7

After making this confusing defence of polluter ads on London public transport, the Mayor then reveals that they only make up between 0.01-0.02% of ad revenue. 🥲

In response, the Mayor first highlighted that ad revenue - even from polluting industries - funds "clean and sustainable alternatives to car use". 🤔

Translation: it's okay to promote companies that are encouraging the public to not use London's sustainable transport options. 🙃 2/7

Of the world's major cities, London has the highest levels of air pollution.

Yet the city's sprawling public transport network continues to promote the very industries threatening Londoner health.

✍️ Call on Mayor Sadiq Khan to implement an ad ban: actionnetwork.org/letters/ba2d...

A ban on promoting industry advertising would have an even greater benefit.

Between them, fossil fuel use, tobacco, alcohol and junk food cause 2.7 million deaths in Europe each year.

And fossil fuel use is second most harmful after smoking. 🛢️🚭 4/5

And, just as expected, removing advertising for junk food resulted in less people eating it. 🤯
