“Adverts promoting pollution on London transport undermine the Mayor’s commitments on clean air and climate action. We’re delighted Sadiq Khan, has pledged to review Transport for London’s ad policy. Public transport should never promote pollution.”

And - just to help with the "practicalities" - Caroline Russell points out that existing UK regulations prohibit ads that "encourage behaviour that is grossly prejudicial to the protection of the environment." 5/7

But, as Caroline Russell highlights, other cities in Europe are already leading the way without national legislation.

Earlier this year, Gothenburg passed a fossil fuel ad ban that includes ICE cars, airlines, fossil fuel companies, and other fossil fuel products. 👏 4/7

After making this confusing defence of polluter ads on London public transport, the Mayor then reveals that they only make up between 0.01-0.02% of ad revenue. 🥲

"It isn't an issue of finances. It's an issue of practicalities." 3/7
November 20, 2025 at 2:32 PM
In response, the Mayor first highlighted that ad revenue - even from polluting industries - funds "clean and sustainable alternatives to car use". 🤔

Translation: it's okay to promote companies that are encouraging the public to not use London's sustainable transport options. 🙃 2/7

When asked about the ban, Sadiq Khan said "the ground-breaking restrictions we introduced could not only influence behaviour and ultimately save lives but could directly save our NHS hundreds of millions of pounds.”

🌍 We took over Southwark station last week, urging city leaders to lead on climate as the C40 World Mayors’ Summit got underway.

We now need to keep up the pressure.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has overseen significant investment in sustainable public transport and cycling infrastructure.

Yet London's trams, trains, and buses continue to promote the very industries profiting from pollution. 4/5

But it's easy to see why frequent flying has become normalised.

The media landscape is saturated with ads incentivising regular cheap short-haul flights. 💰💨 3/5

✈️💨 London is now the global city most exposed to air pollution from aviation.

Yet - across the city's public transport - ads for cheap weekend getaways by plane have become the norm. 🤔

Here's why (and how) we are taking on polluting ads in London. 🧵 1/5

This week, we’ve taken over the ad space of London's Southwark tube station.

Right next to Transport for London's head office, we are calling on Sadiq Khan to stop allowing polluting industries to promote their damaging products. 🧵 1/6

💨 In 2025, a report from the Royal College of Physicians found that air pollution contributed to 30,000 deaths in the UK in 2025 and cost the UK upwards of £27 billion annually – and may be as much as £50 billion when wider impacts, such as dementia, are accounted for.

🚘 🔥 If SUVs were a country they’d be the world’s 5th biggest emitter – more than Germany or Japan. In the decade from 2010, SUVs were the second-largest contributor to the increase in global CO2 emissions.

🌍 What do global cities such as Amsterdam, Stockholm and Edinburgh all have in common?

These major cities have ALL banned fossil fuel adverts. These ads have massive climate and health impacts, all while targeting politically influential decision makers.

Last week, Sadiq Khan attended the C40 World Mayors’ Conference which calls on city mayors to demonstrate climate leadership.

Khan co-chairs the C40 cities network, which promotes guidance to its members on why and how to cut ‘high-carbon’ polluting advertising in cities. 🧐

“Reporters warn that we must stop burning fossil fuels, but those who still buy newspapers are bombarded with adverts suggesting everyone else is enjoying long haul flights and luxury cruises"

✈️ UK national newspapers overall dedicated more space to advertising high carbon travel (1,745 column inches) than reporting the climate talks at COP29 (1,540 ins).

When the world met to tackle the climate crisis, Britain’s papers sold more space to making it worse. 🤥 2/8

And high-carbon industries still continue to pump dirty money into Esports. ⛽️💰

In 'e-Sportwashing', we documented polluting sponsorship deals with the US Army, Shell, and even Russia's state fossil fuel company, Gazprom. 4/5

Ending its petrostate partnership for the Esports Games is welcome, but the Olympics continues to promote the worst polluters. 💰💨

In a report last year, we found that just three sponsorship deals from the Paris Games will produce more pollution than eight coal power plans. 🏭 3/5
