Roselle partner @mfarmer.bsky.social outlines thoughts on DOE's start of a rulemaking process at FERC on large load interconnection.

This is MUCH better than the last time the Trump Admin kicked off a rule making process at FERC (in 2017 aimed at keeping piles of coal around)

Turns out forcing old, uneconomic coal plants to remain online when the operator wanted to retire them is expensive. Keeping Campbell running in MI has cost $29 million over 5 weeks: www.detroitnews.com/story/busine...

As someone with several papers cited, I can say that - at least for the sections I know most about - this "report" is full of selectively chosen studies, misrepresentations and half-truths, specious logic, and dated science
This is an embarrassment for the sterling reputation all of the real scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy. Shame on Chris Wright.

There will be lots of debate today about climate action, and how it affects politics and whether Democrats should remain steadfast in their advocacy for it or instead focus on other things (or perhaps even actively disclaim the importance of action) as a path to political power.

As a lawyer, you know you're having a bad day when a federal judge uses an exclamation point. As the Executive Branch you SHOULD know you're having a bad day when it's used to tell you to follow the law.

Interior issues new memo in response to anti-wind/solar Executive Order that requires any of 69 types of decisions/actions to go to the Office of the Secretary.

This is the way you stall and kill projects. Intentionally red-tape projects to death.

US withdrawal from the IEA because we're mad about modeling assumptions in reports would be extremely shortsighted (and ironic). The IEA coordinates international strategic petroleum withdrawals.

Without it, our ability to respond effectively to a global oil shock would be significantly diminished.

One of my favorite most outrageous parts of the bill is the $1 BILLION giveaway to metallurgical coal producers in the US, even when that coal is exported. We’re going to subsidize iron and steel in countries like China to compete with U.S.-made steel. There’s your govt waste right there.
July 1, 2025 at 10:58 PM
This is extremely true of the energy sections too. A paperwork and regulatory mess for businesses.

Any assertion about this Administration's "deregulation" agenda that does not include this new impenetrable web of requirements is missing a key aspect of the story.

Friday overnight, they added a line to the #OBBA that would send hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to China to subsidize dirty steel.

Insane.

A subsidy for #coal we mostly export. A subsidy to export coal to China to produce steel for less. Steel they use to compete with America.

The Senate bill raises the deficit by more than $3 trillion to give tax cuts to the richest people in America. The idea that the difference between slashing $400 billion & $500 billion in job-creating clean energy incentives creates sincere concerns for “Republican fiscal hawks” is beyond laughable.
