Great start to the season beating Pitbulls 7-2 at home. Quite a few standout performances, especially from Korenchuk and Gabaj. Also thought Hedley had a great game, keeping Bristol at bay until late in the game.

The paper of the time, Luton Reporter, did separate them into first team matches and Reserve team matches at the end of the season, which many years ago caused me a lot of confusion as I thought there must have been 2 separate United Leagues that season!

This did lead to two Luton games being played on the same day, later in the season*, as seen on the Hatters Heritage website. Luton played Southampton in the Southern League as the Reserves played Rothwell in the United League.

The United League was a first team competition but in the 1900-01 season two clubs, Finedon and Rothwell, were much weaker than the other clubs in the league. To level things up all the other teams would play their reserves against them. So the Luton reserves played in a Luton 1st team competition.

I'm also working through heritage numbers for the MKL players, . 1 Nick Pool, 2 Simon Howard etc. I'm not sure what to do with players who have been on the game sheet but not actually iced right now. If I remember correctly they were not added on the legacy jersey the club released in 2023.

No Hooligans is the call from Sweden as Luton are due to have a pre-season there, presumably trouble must have happened with the England fans who had travelled for the match against Sweden.

Also on this day but in 1936 we were involved with a match against Coventry in Division 3 South, and it was a huge one! With only 1 promotion spot available and 3 games remaining the 2 top teams, locked together on points, came head to head at KR (see attached table). The match finished 1-1.

We were one win away from playing in the first Premier League season in 1992-93, instead Coventry stayed up as we were relegated. We eventually made it for the 2023-24 season and we done it by beating Coventry in the Championship play-off final.

On this day in 1992 Luton Town beat Aston Villa 2-0 at home in Division 1. For many years I would then add this was our last win the the top flight but that thankfully that stat has now gone!

Luton Town vs Bristol City
A hugely deserved playoff win for MKL, it would have been a travesty to have done so well this season and to have finished it with nothing. Two superb games, beating league champions Leeds in the semi's and reigning playoff holders Peterborough in the final was a fitting end to the campaign.
