calculator says #dogwood2 rewrite is at 36.3k but I'm doubtful because I just did a Rowan chapter and his POV gives me so much trouble i waste a lot of page space crossing stuff out.

the rewrite is about 8k longer than the same section in the zero draft.😳

#Dogwood2 rewrites hit 35k as i did another 1.8k today.

here's the snip! eff spell check we type directly into canva and hit send.🤣 Owen spends a comic amount of book 2 either asleep, cursed unconscious like Snow White, or drugged. This is because Wesley literally WILL NOT ACT OTHERWISE.
Some of Wesley’s wolf-mother’s were still down here, treasure stolen from the Outerworld and then left to rot in the corners of her den: silk dresses; silver candlestick-holders and twine-wrapped taper candles; trinkets and baubles and gold and silvery jewelry strung from the roots poking through the walls and ceiling; jeweled boxes and jade figures wedged into carelessly-dug alcoves. Owen sat up in the pile of matted, moth-eaten furs where Wesley used to sleep. Still clumsy from the effects of Kenzie’s poison, he rubbed his eyes, seeming sluggish and dazzled despite the low light. Wesley wished they weren’t in Fair Weather, under constant threat--he could have entertained himself with Owen like this for hours.

I tricked everyone into encouraing me to share Wesley's masturbation power fantasy daydream.

At 4am I thought I was on fire.

At 10am in the light of day, this is heinously goofy. BUT....i have no shame. except that i may have oversold how "weird" it is.

That was too scary, he didn't want to think about the fairest. The door banged open and a fair-weather wolf charged in snarling. For some reason it wanted Owen specifically. Probably to rape, torture, and devour him. Okay there was something there. Wesley removed himself from the scene momentarily and played with that new idea. He could put himself and his gun outside the door, and then he'd be the one interrupting — no. He was losing the thread. He put himself back in bed, straddling Owen. The wolf barged in. Owen swooned under Wesley. Wesley drew the gun— “Are you jacking off?” Wesley’s hand snapped out from under the blanket. Owen stood in the doorway with an arm load of firewood. Denial sprang into Wesley's mouth and no farther; he could not lie. Owens gaze dropped demurely but he was smiling. “Do you want to finish?” Still Wesley could not say no. Owen dumped the firewood into the box. “Do you want me to go back outside?” “No.”

i'm at 33.2k in the #dogwood2 rewrite!! is this on track with my original goal? no idea because i forgot to note where i was in the wip on november 1. 🫠

here's the snip. Kenzie in an unusually vulnerable position.
“He passed through here twice,” Rowan described the scene as they picked up the pace. “One way and then the other. The prints in this direction obscure the ones going the other way--this trail is fresher!” The ground rose, grew firmer as they ventured out of the muddy depression. Ferns whisked by Kenzie’s arms as they jogged along. “His trail runs straight!” Rowan’s voice rose dangerously with excitement. “He was moving fast, not covering his tracks. Kenzie, let go of me!” “What! You can’t just leave me here!” “Get down--hide--against the tree!” Rowan shoved her and she sat down hard in a cradle of roots, fronds brushing her cheeks and covering her head. She snatched at him but he slithered out of her reach. “I can move faster on my own--I can catch up to him,” Rowan swore. “This is our chance--he fucked up leaving this trail. It’s not like him--he got upset, he got overconfident, I don’t know. But I have to run or we’ll lose him again!”

So I found a copy of the tragicomic cover of P&P for $25 and I POUNCED on it.

The first time Owen had to change his name had been after a town meeting. Great Gatsby had been only a few years in the public domain and one of the printers had been caught distributing copies. The meeting was about the danger of the text and a reiteration of the ban, a call to dispose of all copies by anonymously dropping them in the book return box at the library/archive, or by burning. At the end of the meeting, as the hosts and moderators were exiting, Owen had stood up on his chair in the middle of the audience and cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted, They retreated back into their money! He'd been sixteen years old, and had spent the days preceding the meeting memorizing entire passages, and he continued shouting them even after the rangers waded through the audience to seize him, even after they hit him in the mouth and told him to be quiet. Then one of the arresting rangers thrust his handgun between Owen’s arm and ribcage and pulled the trigger. The next day, no one remembered what he'd been shouting, nor that his hands had been cuffed behind his back when the gun went off. They only remembered what they read in the Swallowsaw Chronicle the next day: that a raving lunatic had been removed from the town hall after shooting a woman in the crowd point blank, and that the woman had died.

She must have failed, because Rowan turned read to the roots of his hair. “Do you even care what happens to him either way?” “No,” she said. “I guess I don’t.”

#Dogwood2 is...not an easy book to work on. There's some genuinely good writing in it that I'm proud of. But in terms of structure, it is very non-traditional, and maintaining tension and intrigue is its own challenge.😩

I live in fear of it being labeled a "sophomore slump."

There was no true darkness in the city. There was nighttime, and the changing of the scene, and the shadows locals knew to skirt around. Some kind of mournful jazz grew louder and softer then far away as Rowan made his slow circuitous way back to the park, taking care not to backtrack over any of the route Kenzie might have seen him take earlier.
