everything that’s aesthetic now is because the concept of subcultures collapsed, now that everything is on spotify/google/tumblr/etc as image without substance, content without motive, everything happens all at once at all times.
"aesthetics" can never have the staying power of subcultures because there's nothing behind the curtain- steampunks understood this implicitly and retconned an entire culture around themselves as soon as they decided to dress Like That

It's trite to say but it'll never stop annoying me that it all fell off because of the whims of some random unrelated billionaire who had nothing to do with anything. Somehow he got a vote on something hundreds of millions of people were using and outweighed all of them.
For a lot of us, losing Twitter isn’t really about losing ties to the company itself. It’s losing 10+ years of real, asynchronous communities, professional development, the ability to get gigs and clients, the ability to promo/share your art on an extremely broad scale. The loss of that has impact.
