This morning's light was an absolutely beautiful amber glow for just a few moments while the sun was low on the horizon. Even the dried out pokeweed looked poetic.

For the #AlphabetChallenge #WeekUForUnloved theme, is this cast away boot which has been in our woods since we moved here 28 years ago and who knows how long before that. It's not really unloved, as I have a fondness for its tenacity and ever-changing appearance.

In the rainy woods today, I took a snapshot of an old leather boot. It's arranged with the sole positioned diagonally across the bottom left corner of the image; the sole is black, worn nearly smooth, and separating at the toe. The dull grey leather upper has moss growing on it and the eyelets are the color of pewter. The boot is lying on a mossy fall leaf-covered mound; the fallen leaves are rich shades of brown and the moss peeking out from beneath them is bright green. The thin trunks of young trees are visible in the background.

The frame is filled with buttered toast in the bottom left corner, a handmade pottery cup holding hot tea which is making beautifully swirly steam, and two clean white plates with forks crisscrossed on them. The sunshine is entering from directly across me, casting fork tine shadows on the plate surface, illuminating the steam, catching the edge of the toast, and cutting a line across the butcher-block surface beneath these items. It has a warm and cozy feel. Breakfast prep is an everyday occurrence for me and sometimes, like on this day, it strikes me as incredibly beautiful in its simplicity. The butcher block was my parent's, the stainless forks too with their 1970s aesthetic, plates from a cafeteria where our family used to work, and the cup is handmade by my brother in law who was a professional potter. Each of these objects, as well as the food, drink, and morning sunlight offer me warmth.

Breakfast prep. When the cool morning air makes visible the vapor swirling above my cup of tea. I learned a new word today while reading a piece written by a photographer... quotidian: everyday; commonplace; occurring or returning every day.
