My poem Memory of Las Mariposas. I was inspired by In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez November 25 is The International Day Against Violence Towards Women, now called the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It commemorates the lives of the Mirabal sisters who were three ordinary women who opposed Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship in the Dominican Republic and, as a result, were killed by the dictator. It is also a day marked to remember those who have fallen victim to violence and to stop violence done to women. Digital photo-manip 2014. A toy tall ship with the name 'Sweet Dreams' rests on a dresser that is near the window with curtains drawn. Upon the window and the wall the celestial sphere of outer space is seen from the stars to the moon and a spiral galaxy. Children are given the benediction of "Sweet Dreams" after being read a bedtime story and tucked into bed. I wanted to capture a fantastical vision of a child's imagination turning a toy sailboat into their dream ship to sail among the celestial seas. Imagination and dreams are a powerful things for it can take you anywhere should you choose to set sail upon it. I had taken a picture of the toy sailboat by the window months ago, but like some of my works I had yet to figure out how I wanted it to look exactly. Funny how when I finally sit down to work on creating the final product, it sometimes takes on a life of it's own away from what I originally visualized. I had wanted to put a star field with the moon showing through and a overlaid 'map' naming some of the 'dream' celestial seas. But less is more, giving room for the imagination to set sail where ever the stars may take you. For those who follow poetry you make recognize the line as it is from John Masefield poem. The full line is "And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by" We are all feeling the pinch these days, as times are tight and prices climb. Anyone tackle home repair this weekend?

MY DIY project - Dinged & dirty from decades. Cleaned, sanded, painted with primer, & then final color of dark green to match front door. Forgot to take pic of before. Will finish the last 1/2 of door and spots near hinges today. Muscles are very sore.

While hiking on the Craggy Gardens Pinnacle Trail, I came across this fallen tree which looks like an ocean wave frozen in wood - thus a timbertide. Craggy Gardens in North Carolina near Asheville is a popular spot along the Blue Ridge Parkway featuring a visitors center, hiking trails, scenic views, and a lovely mountain picnic area. Elevation of Craggy Gardens is 5,500 feet and since it is more than 3,500 feet higher in elevation than Asheville, one should be prepared for temperatures 10-20 degrees cooler than the city. In summer it is not unusual to be greeted by low clouds and fog, but if one waits a bit it will clear. The weather can change rapidly. Typically during mid to late June Craggy Gardens is covered in a spectacular floral display of pink and purple rhododendron flowers that blanket the trails and mountainside. However, this season the Catawba Rhododendron bloomed early in May. So by June only a few bushes of rhododendron could be found on the mountainside and none on the Pinnacle Trail. While no flowers were to be seen the trail was still a lovely lush green with lovely unique trees growing along the trail.

Just off of 8th street along the shore of Florida's South Beach is a colorful half sun shaped lifeguard station. The bold colors of red, orange, and yellows of the lifeguard station in this photograph invokes the imagery of a sun shining in the blue sky. I can't help but hum the tune Here Comes the Sun. I photographed this for a photo challenge back in 2012 for DPChallenge. The pumpkins are our Halloween decorations. The guitar is my youngest play toy: paper jammz. The Smashing Pumpkins logo was printed and taped to the guitar. The green vines...well, I know that they are not pumpkin vines but use what you have; they were weeds growing around the side of the house. Set-up was not so fun - the photoshoot was more fun and fairly quick.

Many moons ago DPChallenge had a Beatles song challenge. My photography idea was to represent the whimsical nature of a Beatles Song or Lyrics. I chose to represent Fixing A Hole (Where the Rain Gets In) and put a nod to "the sea of holes" from the movie Yellow Submarine. I added a dash of Magritte with a man in top hat. The Topsy-Turvy Man is fixing holes by ironing them out and catching rain with the upside-down umbrella.

Down by the seashore where the Sea Oats sway is where you will find the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse that stands as Sentinel at the end of Gasparilla Island. In this black and white photo one can see the Lighthouse is a little weathered from Hurricane Ian but it still stands watch. I did take the liberty of fixing one of the missing shutters so that it appear whole. Built in 1890 the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse was used to safely guide ships into the Charlotte Harbor. The lighthouse is an iron screw pile design with a wood frame. When lit it is visible from up to 12 miles away.

Twilight paints the sky and the rocky shoreline at the House of Refuge at Gilbert's Bar with the fading light of the day. The currents of this island are seen in the ocean waves coming ashore during low tide and as twilight beautifully illuminates the clouds as they sweep across the sky. Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge located on Hutchinson Island, Florida. Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge was built in 1876 and is the last surviving house of refuge of 10 originally built all along Florida’s coast to aid shipwreck victims. Florida's house of refuge program started between 1876 to 1886 due to the need to prevent the high loss of life and sailing ships from hurricanes and dangerous reefs in a then largely unpopulated Florida. This historic building is on a picturesque portion of beach called the St. Lucie Rocks. Outcroppings of Anastasia limestone line the shoreline.
