Turns out the deal Trump bragged about, the one where China would buy 12 million metric tons of US soybeans by year end, was never an actual deal.

It was a “concept” of a deal.

The clubby deal-making and moral racketeering of the Epstein class is now the United States’ governing philosophy.

The irony is that the vaunted “retribution” Donald Trump promised his followers may end up being turned on him and fellow plutocrats.

Putin launched Europe’s biggest war since WWII — killing civilians, kidnapping children, and eliminating political opponents. Yet Mr. Witkoff says he’s “not a bad guy.” Diplomacy requires engaging with dictators, but that doesn't mean we have to check our values at the door.

[Eliot Higgins noted, X’s architecture turns what should be an information ecosystem into a performative one. “Actors aren’t communicating; they’re staging provocations for yield. The result is disordered discourse: signals detached from truth, identity shaped by escalation, and a feedback loop…”]

There’s a show on in NYC of Monet’s Venice paintings, and it’s pretty great to see his Venetian canvases collected from museums and private collections around the world. But the highlight for me was a bunch of Sargents gathered as part of the “other guys who painted Venice” part. Sargent is my boy.

I think @dinfontay.com summed up the moral fracture in journalism really well: “I feel cliché referencing George Carlin, but after a week like this what else can you say? There is a big club, and we aren't in it.”

We saw on Friday elite solidarity rather than professional solidarity when Trump called a female reporter “piggy” and not a single one of her colleagues came to her defense—presumably because they didn’t want to threaten their own proximity to power.

Through Nuzzi’s interview and book excerpt, we are to understand that her journalistic malpractice was excusable because it was underpinned by genuine emotion. She was the victim of her emotions, and not of the way she behaved as a result of them. But how many others are afforded that privilege?

Reading Nuzzi’s glossy tale of woe told from a Mustang in Malibu while there are so many talented, ethical journalists struggling to make ends meet is an indictment of how far this profession has fallen to elite control. Success has become more of a riddle than a road map.
