"We have a 2000s housing bubble level of financial engineering on top of a 1920s level of private unregulated lending on top of something bigger than a 1990s internet (or 1870s railroad) level of technology and infrastructure build-out. It’s one bubble to rule them all."
From the people who brought you the financial crisis, Theranos, and Juicero: say hello to data center financial engineering!
I'm pretty nervous about this ending badly, but everyone's dug in because AI is the only pulse in the economy.

It’s not just OpenAI that looks overhyped. There’s a whole mountain of sketchy financial engineering underneath.

i think that people who use headphones in public places like trains are selfish. keeping all your cool music and podcasts to yourself is genuinely sociopathic and deranged behavior. play it on your phone's speaker and let everyone enjoy it, or don't play it at all

Don't know if the polity is ready yet for the @InzaneJohnny meme wars
If a soundcloud rapper can become mayor of New York City, perhaps the stage is set for a harsh noise President

A thing about AI in higher ed right now is that half of us are scrambling to deal with the implosion of our information environment that broke reading/writing/source verification, while the other half is trying to achieve a massive institutional buy-in of the very thing that's causing the implosion

Would consider moving from Brooklyn if a nice Manhattan apartment is opening up in this exodus.

This is so dumb. It is impossible to overstate the historical pull of the Cuomo dynasty in NY Dem politics. Mario was a three term governor. A Cuomo has been on the Dem ballot line in about half of elections since the 70s. Mamdani still got over 50% in spite of all that.
Btw, the press obsessing about Mamdani seems weird. He seriously underperformed the Democratic vote in NYC compared to recent elections, barely scraping 50%. Moderate Democrats in VA and NJ dramatically overperformed. That seems the real story

getting emotional about the mayoral election but the thing that actually broke the dam for me was watching zohran screaming his brains out at the knicks game last night. a dude who could easily be one of my dumbass friends is cruising toward a landslide victory. unreal.

FWIW I think this explains a lot of what figures like aoc and bernie have been doing recently (that has caught the criticism of the "online left"). They are doing the basic work of party building that these nominally dem donors should be funding, but are not.
noteworthy that rather than funding experiments into challenging conservative message domination on the local level or building between-election outreach capacity at the state level, centrist donors are throwing millions at what amount to online factional battles among a couple dozen people
it is mostly driven by this guy who represents large dollar donors.

Why did parents start doing this? Goodie bags are over if we want them to be.
I am calling for a full and complete ceasefire on goodie bags

please stop giving my children sticky hands I beg of you
Man, can we have an international moratorium on birthday party goodie bags? We ended up handing out books instead (nothing serious, just funny and mildly educational).

I liked the Platner ads too but I think there's a difference between "guy who had some bad reddit posts a decade ago" and "ex-Blackwater merc who still has a Nazi tattoo." Sucks bigtime that he's the only one taking positions and talking policy I like, but them's the breaks!

FWIW Zohran's campaign is proof that political leaders (heck... maybe even a political party) can win under a "big tent" if they choose issues around which to polarize the electorate. This "popularist" stuff being peddled by yglesias and his ilk is a managerialist evasion of politics as such.
this feels completely banal? yes, a big tent political party is going to include voters who have bigoted views. i don’t think anyone has argued otherwise? the actual question at hand is “to what extent should a political party ostensibly committed to equality appeal to popular prejudices?”
Bigots in the tent
What did you think winning meant? vibes? papers? essays? losers.

It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight. But in neighborhoods across this city, ICE is getting chased by people blowing whistles and shouting. People are running TOWARD ICE to protect their neighbors.

It is impossible to exaggerate how horrible Cuomo was for CUNY. We've got three weeks to get Zohran over the line. Let's go!
CUNY is the nation’s largest urban public university system and an engine of social mobility for the city's working class.

But like so many of our public institutions, Andrew Cuomo subject it to years of disinvestment and neglect as Governor. That record cannot be forgotten.
Cuomo’s controversial CUNY record resurfaces as affordability concerns dominate mayor’s race
Advocates, union leaders and lawmakers have criticized his previous push to cut state aid.

The action is in the reaction. A shortcoming of the mass rally/march as a tactic is that it often fails to raise significant tension, allowing the enemy to just ignore it, which can be demoralizing. Luckily Stephen Miller, a zealous but incompetent authoritarian, has solved this problem for No Kings
